The crazy glue and charcoal fixes aren't generally more than temporarily successful. For the most part, they fall off very easily. They just don't bond to Vulcanite very well. The kind of fix you would need to make there is one that would be likely to fall off at some point.

Unfortunately it might fall apart sooner or later. Hopefully later. It’s like ceramic fills in molars. But maybe it takes some time and some hours of smoking. If it fails you can do another fill or think of a replacement stem.

I’m curious why reborn does it then. Is there a more permanent fix?

It can be used for patching holes if you prep the edges so that they flare top and bottom, with a reduced center. That helps lock the piece into place. Other than that I've no experience with this approach holding up long term. Maybe he has something different that he uses.

It’s too bad. Living in Japan, it costs so much to ship anything out. Shipping here isn’t so bad. But shipping out over to the states is ridiculously expensive these days. This pipe can be shipped here for as little as 12$. Smokingpipes has a supersaver service that would ship an item like this for 4$. But to ship it to the U.S, from Japan is about 30$.

Here’s an example of how to fit a stem to a pipe without a lathe. Some preformed stems come with tenons to adjust to the mortise without the tool he uses. You can that with a template of two wooden rectangular sticks connected on one end with a hinge or fabric tape. Drill a few holes centered in the connecting points of the slats. Fill the round with a strip of sanding paper. Sand the preformed mortise in between to the diameter needed.

I was looking at this page recently for some reason. I don’t know why. This is a bit above my level. I wonder if it’d be easier to get a Kaywoodie stem from a pipe of the same shape number. I wonder if a later pipe with the same number and a four-hole stinger would fit. I’ve no idea. If the stinger fit, the stem could be sanded to look right (if it didn’t already look right). But this is conjecture. Collectors would know if it’s possible. It may be less trouble to cut my losses. I can’t complain to the seller either. I feel it’s just the way it goes.

Or try to contact a Japanese pipe maker, there are some out there. Ask for a new stem if you can’t fix it.

I don’t know if the tenon mortise by kaywoody is always the same. I doubt it.

I once tried to talk to Japanese pipe makers. I did end up striking up a friendship with someone who works at TobaccoPipesJapan so that was nice. But no one here really does repairs and the like. I’ll think on it. Let’s see. I think I’m about done with random sellers on eBay. This is on me. I need to go with sellers who are known in the pipe world. Mkelaw, for example, has some Kaywoodies. They seems expensive but I’m sure they’re worth it for his skills at restoration. There are even cheaper pipes on eBay that are probably reliable. I thought this one just needed cleaning up. I got lucky the last time I did this with a 30s Kaywoodie. No more.
