I recently purchased a lot of pipes from an auction. There are a few that have been partially or completely filled with a white material, hard to the touch. They are all older and vary in condition and style. Any idea what the white stuff is?

I find this quite odd indeed.

Is there even a draft hole??? It almost looks like someone put plaster in it to turn them into decorative paper weights.

Does it break apart at all if you scrape at it?
No draft hole, but they were pipes that are used and don't appear to have visible damage

I haven't tried to hard to scrape or remove but just trying to scratch it doesn't do anything

No such thing as plume or bloom - it's a myth, legend, fairy tale, etc. Scientific testing seems to confirm what we've always suspected, but been hesitant to admit: there's no such thing as plume.
The good folks over at Friends of Habanos put out a reward for anyone who can provide a cigar with plume that turns out to be anything but mold or bacteria. People responded. They sent the cigars to Australia Biotech Laboratories for testing. And they all came up with mold or bacteria.

Then there was a second round of testing. Same thing.

Yeah, looks like someone added some kind of fire proofing and never got a round to smoking it. Who knows what it could be. People have done some very strange things to their pipes. I knew one gentleman that put Ponds cold cream on his rusticated pipes to shine them up! He was s high end collector too. His favorites were Barling quants, very strange indeed.
