I've decided to try adding Perique Blending Tobacco to a few blends of other tobaccos that I enjoy to see if I can come up with something I will like. Any thoughts on what's available and what you have come up with will be appreciated! Which is your favorite?

Just about every major seller of tobacco has perique on hand. Several even sell the stuff. You'll have to decide whether or not you will try blend something other than St. James Perique.

It really is hard to know exactly what your getting when you get perique.

After reading what Mark Ryan says about it, it's clear as mud.

Seems like the stuff labled St. James is made from all locally grown tobacco which causes a lot of inconsistences. Mark says that's the "pure" preique. Then they make Acadian Perique and it's made with kentucky burley.. not fire cured just burley from Kentucky. Mark says that's makes up 90% of what they sell.

My bet is that you get the acadian if you buy blending perique.

It's good whichever it is.

I have a number of Perique tobaccos stashed away.

Stokkebye PS311, McClelland Perique, Sutliff Perique, C&D Granulated Perique, and Whole Leaf Tobacco St. James Perique.

They’re all similar.

My preferred Perique is WLT St. James Perique. Is it really St. James Perique? I can’t say for certain. But of all the ones I have, the WLT has the best flavor to me.

I just opened a bag I had from 2019.

A nice VaPer blend I like to whip up is:
65% Three Sails
25% WLT SJP
10% Sutliff Stoved Virginia

While being rather new to this I do notice that perique does differ. I definitely have a superior and inferior bag of perique. They both smell and taste the same but one has much more of the flavor I like than the other which to me is watered down. This could be because of something as simple as age and oxidation.

If in the EU I suggest the Torben Dansk. I have serious doubts about it being real SJ perique but it does make a blend taste like it has more Peique. The other EU choice is McConnell. For me it was pretty flat and didnt add much flavor.

I've just begun to pickup the pleasure of pipe smoking again. And everything is new & fresh again except my pipes. I've gone bonkers with mixing various purchased tins & small bulk batches. My favorite two are.....English Balkan Blend.jpgVirginia Burley Blend.jpg
Additionally, this amazing pouch was rediscovered....

I’ll have to try that, my Dark Sails is about the same, but DFK in place of perique.

To answer the question posited in the first post, I’m low brow-my face is Sutliff TS20

I've never blended anything really, except mixing some tobacco together few times. Sometimes it works and other times it doesn't, usually something I wasn't going to smoke other wise something change. But lately I've been wanting to try and make my own blend. I want to mix bright and red Virginia with white and dark Burley, and then Perique. i was thinking about mixing C&D Yorktown with C&D Cube Cut Burley, and then C&D Granulated Perique. And just mix the three together real good and see what happens. It probably won't turn out the way I expect it should lol. But anyway I was thinking about doin something like this.

I guess I'm the odd-man-out. The mixing that I do doesn't highlight just a predominant tobacco. I really like "complex". That means the smokey tobaccos Latakia & Perique , the Virginias & Burleys in various forms, & the significant variety of Orientals. In the middle of this is the "roux-effect" of dark Cavendish, both flavored & unflavored. It's just fun to have a variety of such mixes. Not blends, because they comprise name-branded blends as well as my own single types mixed in. Why play solo or in a trio when you can play in an orchestra?2025-04-06_21-25-21.jpg2025-04-06_21-26-37.jpg

That sounds like an enjoyable task. I have done such of this and really liked the outcome. If you start with a smaller batch it allows you a lot of room to tweak your blend to be just what you like. I would find it unusual to find perfection the first batch. I usually make my blend smoke a bowl of it then tweak it a bit. This process may continue for some time. I'm usually having my blend just right in about a week. I am smoking my perique/latakia/ filler tobacco blend just now. Good Luck :)

Appreciate your advise of starting small. Just makes sense. On the flip side, not everything turns out perfect...but the trip is worth while:
