With trading and a world wide job market it can give somebody an edge to speak a number of languages..hmmm, maybe I'll get Rosetta Stone

I refused to pay the obscene amount they wanted for it, and downloaded a cracked copy and Italian and Mandarin language packs. I'd say that it would work way better with someone fluent to practice with daily.

I don't speak any foreign languages other than sarcasm, lol. In high school, didn't foresee the importance and opted for the tech. prep seal on my diploma.
I really wish schools in the states would teach languages earlier - my first opportunity to take any language class wasn't until I was in High School.
Many places with the good mix of different cultures are getting into charter schools and starting multiple languages in elementary school. At least they are here in GA...
Our daughter is in 2nd grade and is fairly fluent in Spanish and getting there with Mandarin. By the end of 5th grade, she should be able to read, write, and converse in both fluently. Also, with the Spanish, it's not just learning the textbook dialect. Each of her Spanish teachers are from different Latin communities, so she's learning several.

English (obviously), Latin (conversational, not quiet fluent though), and French (Quebecios, not Parisian - and also not quite to conversational level). I can understand the jist of most of the "Romance" languages if spoken slowly enough; due to my background in Latin.
I am also pretty damned fluent in BS.

took Chinese in college and lived in China for a little over a year, so I can speak it fairly well. I speak Spanish decently. French very little. I lived in the UK for a while, as well, so I can speak British. It's strange when you live there for any amount of time, you start to pick up small language accents and terms without even thinking about it. When I was in Scotland I started saying 'aye' instead of yes.

I love to hear that!
Gen. Patton's suggested that; every man should be able to swear for 3 minutes without repeating himself.

It never occurred to me to use more than one language.

I'll have to lean some new swear words now.

I speak English only now. Spoke Korean as kid but became stubborn and gave it up. My mother claims I should just pay attention .I was afraid of not fitting in when we moved state side. Studied Spanish, French and Japanese later on.

Besides English I'm conversant in Spanish.
I used to have good French, but Spanish seems to have displaced it, so I can understand it and read it, but not speak it.
I can order a beer, say please and thank you and cuss a little in Gaelic, German, Russian and Czech.
Have been thinking I'd really like to become conversant in Gaelic, but that's difficult to accomplish in Ireland these days, let alone Miami.

fluent in English, Southern, and Trucker
Masons right about Trucker now, its a complicated language.

My nephews used to ride with me on the road some, they were confused the first time they heard Trucker on the CB. "Westbound full grown flip flopped the comedian at 194, eastbound rolling 195 roger", "Roger westbound, you got a 4-wheeler greasy side up at the 183, got the granny lane shutdown, meat wagon rolling your front door 192, y'all be good we gonna step it on easterly bound roge-o"

I speak a bit of coonass too, not Acadian proper, but I can sing a song or two in creole.

I speak English, I can get by in Spanish but I understand more than I can speak, I can understand a lot of basic German phrases as well as Japanese phrases, and I know some Italian that I think I can understand because of my Spanish!
