I have been smoking pipes for about a month so obviously VERY new. I have been trying different tobaccos in Aros, English, Virginias, etc. and mainly trying all in cobs.

I’ll admit that my taste buds are shot so extruding flavor is slim to none. Although the Aros I’ve tried have been nice to smoke, there is no flavor. However, that is not the point of this thread.

I recently ordered some C&D Star of the East, C&D Smooth English, Arango Balkans Supreme and not to ignore the Aros…Sutliff Molto Dolce.
These tobaccos we’re chosen by reading reviews and recommendations. I realize that flavor/taste is subjective so what works for one…

Today I tried the Star of the East and half to admit that it almost made me sick. Especially about an hour AFTER I finished. I did smoke it in a new pipe that hasn’t been used for anything else but this brand is just not for me.

Question - The pipe I used is sitting on my kitchen counter and just walking past it and getting that nasty smell is making me sick. What is the best way to rid that pipe of the smell?

Some things to try (I’m not familiar with Star of the East)

- try smoking some codger blends in it, like Carter Hall, that can some times resolve any ghosting
- let it sit and see if the offending odors dissipate, sitting in the sun may accelerate the process
- it’s a cob so in the worst case buy another

I don’t know how cobs respond to a salt and alcohol treatment, that may be an option as well. It works pretty with briars.

good luck

I like Star of the East also, but it is really Latakia-heavy. The residual smell is Latakia residue I'm sure, so I'd either smoke another non-latakia blend in it to mitigate the smell, or do an alcohol spritzed paper towel reaming of the chamber, and an alcohol dipped pipe cleaner in the stem. That should greatly lessen it, if not remove the smell altogether.

You might want to think about your smoking technique.
Sounds like you may have been drawing to hard and/or burning too hot.
The secret to extracting flavor from burning tobacco is to keep the combustion temperature as low as possible.

Then again, Va/Latakia/Oriental blends may just not be the right thing for you!

Things to try, in order:
Hot tap water flush;
wet coffee grounds, dry a day or two;
Alcohol and salt or cotton balls soak.
I never had to go beyond step one with any ghost. A bit of hot water and the pipes are fresh like the first day!

The Latakia pipes I smoke are kept in my outside pipe racks for my wife's benefit and mine. That is if I want to them from going in the bin.

Perhaps a few of the water-fraidies will get it.
