I’m still not convinced anyone actually enjoys five brothers. They all just say they do to get another unsuspecting piper to try it. Some kind of twisted right of passage.
Well honestly I love the stuff. It's easy to smoke tastes great has enough nic to be satisfying in a smaller pipe. It's uncomplicated but not overly simple. The flavor reminds me of a medium cigar in every way I can mean medium. Medium flavor strength and price point. The thing with it is you have to smoke it differently then other pipe tobaccos. One you have to jam it in over pack it. That makes a huge difference. You have to go slow and tamping is important. You shouldn't worry about even burns just going slowly. Great stuff I buy it by the display package.

Smokingpipes.com comes through again, and these pouches were delivered to my hotel in Florida with no problems, no drama.

Where to start?

I'm going right back to the basics as I have to relearn everything. Where would you recommend a total newbie to start?

I'm certain I missed the part where you explained why you are a newbie [again]?

Run it as pictured, like a wine tasting in a way (light to heavy).

Half and Half is my favorite codger blend, so I'd start there for the comfort of an old friend. Five Brothers is a stout codger blend that is also a favorite, so I'd work my way up to it.

With Mixture No. 79 being more flavored (from what I hear, it's on my list to get), it goes just prior to the Brothers.
You're right, run it as pictured. Good catch.

Long story.

Basically had a neighbour over and had a pipe after a year long hiatus. Couldn't keep it lit, couldn't get any tastes, it was awful. Repeated a couple days later with the same result.

Basically I'm starting over from scratch.

I did a codger tour something like this. A pouch of Captain Black, Half & Half, Prince Albert match, Carter Hall match, SWR, St. Bruno, etc.

I actually found that I don't really like any of them. Some of them smell nice (H&H) or have a decent room note, but the ones that weren't like smoking air were too cigarettey to me, and some had foul after tastes or a chemical flavor. JMO There was a gooey burned taste left in the pipe after one of them, can't remember which.

The two I thought were on the better end were the Sutliff bulk match of Edgeworth (Ready Rubbed), and the regular Sir Walter Raleigh. But those were still one note experiences and fairly bland. I like them ok when I'm in the workshop or doing something else because they burn through without needing any attention but that's all.

No one tricked me into trying Five Brothers thankfully :ROFLMAO:

Half n Half is a fine blend. The only one pictured that I have not tried is Sail. Half n Half will be a tough one to beat.

Unless the flavors of M79 are more to your liking. It tastes better than all that topping would allow you to believe.

Five Brothers burns very fast so like Anotherbob suggests, tamp it tight and draw slowly.

I don’t much care for Capt Black but if I had to choose it would be the Gold I suppose.

Enjoy 😉

I like Captain Black Gold and smoke it most of the time, mainly because I can get it at my local grocery store in a pinch. It is entirely overpriced at $12 a pouch, but I don't smoke all that much, and it also seems cheaper than a big online purchase of $50 or so for a lot more tobacco. Makes no actual sense but in the short term I feel like I kept more of my money and still got to smoke some good (to me) tobacco. I actually much prefer Carter Hall but there's that big check-out price with shipping, so I usually just smoke CB Gold.
