Hi. I've been smoking a pipe for a few months and spent almost of that time with various burley blends. Early on, I had tried several cavendish based aromatics, which I didn't like at all as well as a couple of English blends which I want crazy about either. The English tobaccos that I tried were HGL and Voodoo Queen.

Just recently, I picked up several non-burley blends and blending tobaccos. Of the blending tobaccos, I got a ribbon cut red Virginia, a ribbon cut Bright Virginia, a Red Virginia Cavendish, Izmir Turkish, Dark Fired Kentucky, and Chopped Cigar Leaf. The blends that I received are Newminster's No. 84 Oriental Pipe Cut, C&D's Oriental Silk, and PS's PS400 Luxury Navy Flake.

Of all that I listed, the Navy Flake is my favorite. The Oriental Silk is pretty interesting as well, but I find myself choosing that blend maybe 1 in 4 smokes where the Navy Flake would be the other 3. I didn't care for the No. 84 OPC.

I didn't care for the cigar leaf or red cavendish at all. I want to like the DFK because of it's deep dark flavor, but it suffers from the same issue that I find with burley, and that is the development of a noticeable ashiness over the course of the bowl, whether alone or added to something else. This is why I ventures away from burley blends in general.

The red and bright Virginias along with with the Izmir is interesting enough to play with, but I don't really fancy myself as a home blender and won't be purchasing them again, though they will eventually get finished.

Going back to what I like, I think I definitely want to focus on vapers - especially but not necessarily in flake form. Other tobaccos may be included but I think but only as condiments and preferably not burley. The extra consignments aren't mandatory. It is entirely possible that I will settle into becoming a straight vaper devotee, but perhaps not. Maybe there's a Virginia flake out there that would meet my needs. I am open to trying something with Latakia in it again, but it would have to be at a very small percentage of the blend. I think I would like something that has a bit more natural fruity sweetness than the PS400 Luxury Navy Flake. Any tobaccos that I try must be available in bulk. Until I get a better paying job, this is non-negotiable.

I look forward to your recommendations.

Thank you!

Before the purge I would have suggested Newminster 400 and Sutliff Virginia Slices. The PS 400 and PS 403 are the only other ones.

You might try Watch City Flake 558 and Old Dominion. Might also try Stokkebye Evening Flake too.

Ps..I'll add that Peretti flake is excellent their Ampersand, Boston Slices, London Flake, and No 8 all very good.

You may want to try Rattray’s Marlin Flake and Brown Clunee. These 2 are available in 500g (just over a pound) boxes. However, they are available only periodically and they sell out quick, so you have to keep a sharp eye out.

Peter Stokkebye Luxury Bullseye Flake is the one that comes to mind that fits your description of a sweeter Vaper that is available in bulk. It is very good.
When you are able to expand your horizons with tinned tobacco, the opportunities are endless.

Happy smokes.
I second PS-LBF, but I find it pretty flat when first released. It's too young. Give it 4 years to age and you have a remarkably rich Va/Ber/Bur.

A local b&m store that I visited today had Peter Stokkebye's Luxury Twist and Luxury Bullseye flakes available in bulk. I left with an ounce of each and smoked a bowl of each after work.

I am skeptical that I'll ever buy the Twist again. It was a bit harsh at the beginning and a bit ashy at the end. I wonder if both issues stem from the topping or casing they use. It wasn't bad for the 2nd and 3rd quarters of the bowl. The flake was perhaps a bit most and I'm also now wondering how much that affected the beginning and end of the bowl for me.

On the other hand, the Bullseye absolutely knocked it out of the park for me and easily moved up to my favorite smoke so far. I was worried that the cavendish would mellow out the flavor of the blend out too much but it didn't, at all. I thought it packed quite a bit more flavor than the PS's Luxury Navy Flake and am guessing that is from a higher percentage of perique. I love this!

I'll second @VDL_Piper for the Peterson DNR recommendation, and since LBF went over so well, it'd behoove you to give Davidoff Flake Medallions a try. All these VA based blends seem to age delightfully, so there's that delayed gratification thing we all rave about.

Thank you!

People are giving you a bunch of tin recommendations, expensive ones at that. HU Directors Cut is 30 bucks for 100g and Peterson Navy Rolls is over 20 for 50g.
I'm not a big Virginia guy. I do enjoy Luxury Bullseye Flake.
Maybe look at 4th Generation they have a Va/Per flake. C&D Bayou Morning and/or Poplar Camp could be something to give a shot. C&D has a some more Va options in bulk all ribbon cut. Go to smokingpipes and us the tobacco locator to see if any interest you as well. Match Victorian and 507c would have been a good suggestion for you last year, but that's going away/gone.
Price to performance it's hard to beat Peter Stokkebye right now for bulk flake.

I ended up picking up the 1.5 lb box of the bullseye flake. It is so good!
Jar a bunch and let it rest. It gets richer and smoother. You can also stove it. Low temp cooking it then jar it up for a month. It does some interesting changes. Look up stoving in this forum, you’ll find a bunch of how to’s. I did it with LBF and it came out great. Fun experiment. Good luck in your journey of finding the flavors and experience you enjoy.
