I've decided to try mylar bags for storing tobacco. I have questions:

1. Where to find them?
2. Are they heat sealed or sealed a different way?
3. Has anyone used the vacuum seal bags like for a food saver?

1. Amazon
2. Heat sealed; impulse/mylar bag sealer
3. Food saver machines don't work well at all for mylar bags in my experience. I think because the mylar is a smooth material.

Amazon. I think Pleasant Valley is the brand I've orchard and been happy with. I buy the ones with zip lock but definitely heart seal above the zip lock. I use a clothes iron, has worked well. You want oxygen for aging, I wouldn't vacuum seal.

Hey Pappy, I also recently switched over to using mylar for long term storage instead of jars. I purchased the mylar bags through Amazon ensuring to choose PackFreshUSA as the seller. (Note: they send oxygen absorbers, do NOT use them for tobacco).

I then used an clothes iron set on the highest setting (with no water) sealing the top of the bags (above the “ziploc seal”. Running it over the bag looking to make a straight line, which took about 30 seconds per bag.

I did this a year ago and recently opened up a bag and the tobacco was in perfect condition, not dried out or crunchy, but like it was the day I put it in the bag.

Best of success!

I buy the 5 mil Wallaby brand on Amazon. Others say you need 7 mil, but 5 mils of plastic encapsulating aluminum does the trick for me. I don't move mine around or jostle them around near sharp objects. I also double seal them just in case and try to remove most of the air beforehand, but never vacuum so some air stays in to do its work.

1. Amazon. I use Wallaby brand mylar bags.

2. Some of them have a ziploc seal on the top, but still need to be heat sealed to keep it airtight. For this, I use the Wallaby 12 inch impulse heat sealer.

3. I have not used Food Saver bags for long term storage. Only for short term.

Regardless of which brand you choose, I would recommend mylar bags for long term storage if you plan on cellaring a lot of tobacco.
