Mmmm indeed some different feelings yesterday. I loaded my Stanwell featherweight poker with some ketchupy Butera royal cake and went for a walk... You definitely get more of the tobacco aroma/taste by doing this trick. I couldnt do it in a natural way but I guess it just requires some practice.

Welcome to the forum Skunk. Lots of great suggestions above, the slower you smoke the more flavor you will get. It does take time to develop a cadence that works for you. Proper packing, lighting, drying of tobacco will all lead to a better smoking experience. If you are going to stick with this I would suggest investing in a quality pipe. You can pick up a nice Savinelli for not a lot of money from one of our sponsors. In my opinion, a good quality briar will also lead to a better smoking experience. When you have a good pipe that is broken in with a good cake, the difference is like night and day.

Wise words above all. Here in fl. It is a must do to dry tobacco. This solves many problems. The taste is lost many times in steam, your enemy in many ways. Tongue bite, hot pipe, and a very bad smoke. Sounds like you have good tobacco. Sooo Maybe a Savinelli 9mm.You can use the adaptor or wood adsorption stick, or a carbon or paper or meerschaum filter and have all those choices. What a lucky guy, you're getting a new pipe.

Hey all! Thanks for the tip on drying tobacco first. On my next smoke, I will definitely try that. How long is recommended for the drying time? I think I saw 1/2 hour above. Usually I just pack my pipe straight from the bag.

Drying the baccy is less about time and more about feel someone somewhere can explain the pinch test and the feel for you...I unfortunately would give you a bunch of flowery metaphors that would do you no good at all

skunk - re "Some puffers use a hair dryer, some place a bowlful in the sun, some even microwave a bowlful (careful on the latter -- too much zapping will ruin the tobacco -- just 5-10 seconds should do it). "
A gentle and controllable way to dry the tobacco without toasting it is to get a lamp with an old fashioned incandescent light bulb and use that to dry out the tobacco till you like it. Hurry though since the guv'mint is getting rid of those kinds of bulbs. I don't think LEDs or those CFLs throw out enough heat to get it done.
