Of course. Makgeolli is also regional. Where I live, we have a specialty Makgeolli that uses chestnuts. There are many different types of Makgeolli, kind of like micro-brewed beer. Some are made with different aged rice, flower essence, honey, fruit, etc .We also incorporate chestnuts into alot of everyday food: bread, rice, various dinner dishes, salad....... you name it.Hope to visit one day. Do you have good Makgeolli produced near where you live?
I haven't come across any Korean specific tobacco. A Korean guy I smoke with has never mentioned it, so I assume that it doesn't exist. Besides, all of the pipe tobacco here is imported. The shop I visit once every couple of months has tins of C&D from 2015, which is a nice treat. I found a tin of Pirate Kake from 2013 too. The prices here aren't too bad either. I can get a 2oz tin for around $20. I'll gladly pay that for a tin with age on it. Also, they have a nice selection of G&H and Sam Gawith tobaccos, but unfortunately all the tins of Squadron Leader had been opened for some reason. I could lightly press on the tin and it was like the sound of doritios crunching. I passed. He still has tins of MacBaren Vintage Syrian though! It’s got me wondering what a Korean pipe blend would be like??? Wait, if it would be anything like the cigs........never mind! The food is awesome as hell though
Pine tree cigs? What brand were they? I haven't seen 'em. I used to smoke the Raison Presso, which had bits of coffee grinds in the filter. Opening a pack smelled like a fresh hazelnut latte. I loved the flavor. Another good one is Cigar Cubana (formerly Mojito). Yea, its a cigarette with a small portion of cigar leaf with mint and lime essence added. A lovely smoke.Oh yeah.......cheap soju and pine tree cigs, recipe for disaster. Don’t know how I survived 2 yrs there
Was there in the late 80’s for a couple years. Wasn’t any tobacco selection other than cigs made in Korea off base. Here is a pic of the pack. Also they have cigarettes that taste like Xylitol gum, yogurt and bubblegum.
That’s awesome that you can get your hands on some good pipe tobacco! I’ve been in situations while stuck in other countries (Iraq and Afghanistan) where I had to wash, re-cure in the sun and cut up Red Man to smoke my pipeI haven't come across any Korean specific tobacco. I’ve only had the crappy one from a plastic bottle.
Live here long enough and you will find things to not like, but that goes for anywhere you live. I left the USA 6 years ago and find myself missing many things. When I come home for vacation I find things I miss in Korea. I feel more safe in Korea by a longshot, but the access to certain comforts make it difficult at times. If you're not actively pursuing the Korean language, in the military or on a special job such as a contractor or model, Korea is quite limited for us English teachers. I could go back to school and get my Masters and get a uni job, but teaching isn't my passion anymore. I've climbed the payscale to the second best after 6 years and met my wife, but other than that I don't want to live here for the rest of my life.I'd love to go to Korea someday. Good food, cool people, baseball... What's not to like?
