Just an update. Thanks again for all the insight, and encouragement! After reading this whole post, I won't be able to respond to each individual reply, so please forgive me! I have smoked a tin of Early Morning Pipe, along with random other bowls of non-aros. I have found that with the standard packing I was doing the tobacco would almost never truly light, and I had to tamp a ton in order for the flame to take. So I began packing tighter. Actually probably using double the tobacco I previously would, and magically my tobacco light almost by itself! Keeping it lit for longer than 5 minutes also happened occasionally (far more frequently than before), making my realize how much practice I need tamping. I did still end up with about 1/4 of the bowl left that would not light, but it was not due to moisture in the bowl. In fact, I had almost zero moisture in the bowl (enough to see some in the draft hole, but no gurgling). No to figure out why that last bit won't take a light if it isn't due to moisture. Progress... finally! And who would have thought that I was packing too light for the tobacco to even take the light. Another problem I encountered though is realizing how much smoking outside increases difficulty. No only because of the wind factor, but also because being unable to visibly see smoke upon exhaling, I tend to over sip.
Also, going into smoking sessions already relaxed (or as relaxed as possible at the time) has helped as well!
Thanks again y'all!

Great to hear!
I've been smoking outside a lot, and it's windy where I live. So I take a leaf and fold it, or an almond hull, and just hold it on top of the bowl, pressing down. Helps a lot.

Yup, when I have my pipe it's mostly in a drafty barn (cement floor), behind a big solid picket fence (and mostly surrounded by trees), or in a sheltered porch.

I'll let the more established pipe smokers give their smoking tips, but I will just point out that nicotine is a CNS stimulant. The relaxing properties of smoking, I believe come from the mindfulness, patience and concentration that come from learning to smoke a pipe or cigar well. Smoke for only as long as you enjoy smoking. If the pipe starts to taste foul, let it go out. If you're tired of smoking the pipe, let it go out.

2 things:
1. Your tobacco is too wet. dry it out for 30 minutes, or more before smoking it.
2. Get a Missouri Meerschaum Corn Cob Pipe.
That will probably eliminate your troubles.

man I have 3 kids and a wife that get all my attention alllll dayyyy longggg and plus I work hard all day long!!, pick up the pipe help me to relax so much, It takes some time, but man if you are patient and get it all pat down, then you can just chill outside the porch, drink you some nice beer or whiskey and you will see this fast paced world, slow down.. I am fairly new at this, and for years people been telling me that tobacco was bad, but it is very different when talking about pipe tobacco, I love it and it calms me down, and the learning experience is much appreciated, just wish I knew more people in my area that smoke pipe tobacco

It took me awhile myself and I am by no means perfect but way more proficient with the first 3/4. I can also differentiate between blends now. I saw a big change after my pipe got some cake built up/broken in. I also dedicated myself to 1 pipe until I got the hang of it. Keep pressing on.

@hextor: sorry mate, it really wasn't my intention to sound arrogant or anything. I was genuinely surprised how you still had trouble enjoying your pipe after that long. Your response had cleared it all up.

I took to the pipe pretty quick, the only issues I had was some tongue bite from puffing too hard. I found it relaxing my first bowl. I did have hands on help though.

i bought my brother his first pipe and some good tobacco and we are enjoying it my friend thought we were smoking weed, because we were talking about the planets and time travel, smoking tend to makes you think more outside the box, overall it does help if you find a good trusting friend to smoke with you and have a couple of drinks ,

For me it's always been relaxing. It's always been a welcomed break from the chaos of everyday life.
I will say it did get even more relaxing once I got my routine and technique down. I'd say that was probably about six months or a year into having 2-3 bowls a day.

When the concern, doubt and fear end.
Sort of like, well, just about anything else.
Remember learning to ride a bike? Yep: it was sort of awkward and then one day it all fit, without having to think about each part deliberately. The result was none of the (perceived) work and risk, and all of the enjoyment.
At least, until I accidentally jumped it over a curb and got airborne, but that's another story.
