The nut sack method works best. Put the pipe against your nut sack and if it makes you jump out of your chair it is too hot.

A cat. Find a near by feline. Gently pet them and slowly move the bowl to their nose. If they purr all is well. If you find you need major medical coverage for the damage to your hand and arm then it is probably too hot.

occasionally, i use cheek test. my hands are too sensitive to know the difference between warm and hot. everything's freaking hot to my fingers.
