I'm still very much in the honeymoon phase of rediscovering pipe smoking, and I feel like the OP--I could go bowl after bowl all day long. My limiters are the fact that I can only smoke so many bowls before my tongue starts to protest (starts at 4, gets difficult to ignore at 6). Also, I limit myself to smoke only when relaxing on the porch; I don't like to smoke while doing any other activity aside from driving. On most days, I don't have to drive anywhere so that's out, and relaxing does have limits because I have things that must get done every day. With those limiters in place, I generally smoke 3-4 bowls a day and that's it.

I don't know. 10 bucks for a pack of Newports or 15 bucks for a pack of Redman chew is pretty high.

And I live where tobacco is cheapest...

Tobacco is cheap to produce... Just because the Aussies are being abused, that doesn't make what's going on here right.
Never said it was right, but it sure could be worse.😪 i told my mom Red Man was $15 a pouch. She about flipped. I remember her buying dad a carton of Red Man a week, she think she spent under ten bucks for it.

Hello from London. I've smoked cigs most of my life, still spark up a RYO of Amber Leaf from time to time.

For me, nicotine in pipe tobacco is almost a bonus to the flavours rather than the objective. Because I'm retired, I have the time to indulge - when I was working, I might only manage 2 or 3 bowls a day, whereas now 6-10. I've had 4 this morning, now having a break.

Really, just smoke when it suits you. Savour the idea of the next one, comfortable in the knowledge that it will be there when you're ready. If your life begins to revolve around it, be grateful it's not heroin.

Do you still get Carroll's Major Extra Size in NI? They were my first choice cigs back in the '80s.

How about AUD$155 for 50grams in Oz ?

I only smoke on the weekends and when I’m on holidays, so I don’t go through a lot of tobacco.
Usually 2 bowls a day, back to back.
Occasionally I may have a 3rd bowl if the previous 2 smokes were short.

Smoking for me is “me time” - a chance to wind down and relax.
I always smoke whilst seated and not while I am doing something.

I look forward to my pipe time.
But have never craved a smoke.
It’s never about the nicotine
Oz, your pace and routine is just about identical to my own. Although my second bowl is usually a bit later and not back-to-back.

Like I said above, $6 a pound for RYO on any reservation here in NYS.
They call it "pipe tobacco", but it's just RYO cigarette tobacco. In PA you can get the same pound for about $12. Nobody sells this fake pipe tobacco off the reservations in NYS, it would be over $20.
I got the good stuff, $4.85 for 6 ounces on the reservation. :) This same 6 ounce bag I can get for about $8 just over the border in PA.
Copenhagen and such is $3 on the reservation, $3.85 in PA.....$12 in NYS.
I use Stokers in the 12 ounce tubs. It costs $11 on reservation, $25 in PA and $40+ in NYS off reservation. Luckily I live on the PA border, and about 25 miles from the Seneca Nation......can you guess where I live? :)

That's a lucky situation for you. Those beat our prices down south.

Haha thanks for the advice!

No i don't believe we do. Not in the shops anyway. I have never heard of them and I have been smoking for a long long time. Well I don't smoke cigarettes anymore but I have always had some form of smoke since I was a young boy.

Smoking a pipe is about the flavour for me and not the nicotine. I suppose I would be quite like yourself in that manner.

Very close, about 10 miles SE of Clymer. Literally on the PA border near Bear Lake PA.
Erie is about 45 miles away.

Out of curiosity, is whole leaf tobacco taxed at the same rate down there?

The reservations are very cheap and for some reason Pennsylvania is cheap for tobacco and gas.
There is a gas refinery in Warren PA, about 25 miles from our house.
They own a bunch of gas stations called KwiK Fill which has gas about 6 cents cheaper than NY.
Gas on the reservation comes from Grand Island NY, which is 100+ miles away, but about 30+ cents cheaper.
Gas on the Res is about $2.55/gal right now. Down from $3.69 a year ago.

Ok I see. Looks like some really pretty country. I bet the landscape in fall is gorgeous.
It's quiet and very friendly with no crime. My family has owned this land for 180 years.
We live in the foothills of the Allegheny mountains. With the rolling hills and very sparse human population, it is very special in the Fall.
Lots of tourists come for the scenery and Chautauqua Lake.

1 smoke per day, after dinner. Might be a pipe, might be a cigar. On the weekends, usually 2-3 smokes per day. Mixture of pipes and cigars. The way I see it, Monday-Friday my evening smoke is my reward/relaxation for a day's work. On Saturday, my smokes are my rewards for doing yard work all day (with frequent, lengthy smoke breaks). On Sunday, that is a solemnity and the Lord's Day... we should not work, but worship and relax with family and friends. Pipes and cigars are a fantastic way of doing that.

Hi all.

New to the forum, hope this is the right sub forum and proper way of things.

I have been smoking pipes now for going on two years and have enjoyed it for the most part. I would like to ask a question to the general populace, veteran and newbie alike.

I really enjoy smoking a pipe and to quote Tolkien "I enjoy smoking a pipe beyond the point when you enjoy it" and I find this to be my case.

I'm not weathly and I can obviously rake up a hefty tobaccoo bill each week. But I can do a pipe after one another espcially if I have alcohol.

My question is this. How do your limit yourself, how do you "reward" yourself? I tried for a week where I left my pipe and tobaccoo at home while I was at work but it was the only thing I could think of at the time.

The reason I'm asking as I am faced from Tuesday onwards with emotional overtime at work with the good weather and longer days coming in. I don't want to be a prisoner to my pipe which I throughly enjoy. I just don't want to be working for smoking.

So basically how to you balance work, life, social and smoking life all in one. At what rate do you smoke?

Ciaran
It's not a problem I have; my lifestyle and pipe smoking aren't particularly compatible. Keep in mind that, on principle, I don't smoke inside my house so as not to force those who live with me to endure something that isn't their choice. So I smoke four or five pipes a week.
