I wouldn't call mine a "full bent" but a chin-rester non-the-less.

Nice Pete, samcoffeeman. Is it made "In Ireland," "In Eire" or "Free State"?
Lawrence, I think it takes a certain physique (big, tall) to pull off that pipe.
Thanks for sharing the pics, guys.

Not quite a full bend but definitely one of my favorite jaw hangers. Boswell pipe I bought specifically to clench while I need to use my hands.

My other favorite is an extremely small Pete System 317 I believe. Almost identical to the one fitzy posted but in a fishtail instead of P lip

Oh sorry forgot to elaborate on why. Simple enough, they're both extremely light weight. Really has nothing at all to do with looks to me.

Yeah, I've been thinking about buying a 317 (fishtail). It's small and I'd like a bent for Vapers and VAs, which I like better in a smaller bowl.
That's a great Boswell, by the way. Most of his pipes are just too big for my purposes, but that's a cool pipe -- very compact and thus not too much leverage on the teeth, I'd bet.

I don't clench but I do love the look of a good bent pipe.

I also have a thing for bent bulldogs.

In my younger days, I favoured straights -- thought they made me look more suave & debonair. Now that I'm old and beyond thinking in such terms, almost all my "go-to" pipes are bent - all my Petersons, Savinellis, my one Dr Plumb and my new Britannia. Just seem to smoke better, hang better, and keep the "gunk" down low where it belongs.
The only remaining straights that I still smoke on a regular basis are my eponymous 4dot Sasieni, and my Savinelli Estella Canadian - man, that big pipe is a sweet smoker!

I find myself not smoking my full bent pipes all that often. My Winslow is just too heavy and the stem is acrylic, my Caminetto is a great pipe but again acrylic stem. My Upshall I just got back from the shop and it has seen a bit more use as that is vulcanite. Here are the three I own.

That's interesting. That might be why I've always been drawn to straights (vanity) -- in fact, before I started smoking regularly about two years ago (I'm in my mid-30s), I wouldn't even think of smoking anything but a straight pipe. But still, I think there's something to that line of thinking. Straight pipes do tend to look more youthful or rakish (or something), while bents seem to evoke contemplation, calm, and the kind of quiet confidence that comes with age.

Great to see those pictures, Harris. The Winslow is particularly nice -- I'm guessing it's one of the letter grades (C or D, perhaps?). I've often wondered how those 70s Caminettos smoke, but if you say it's a good one, I trust your opinion. I used to not like the Caminettos and Ascortis, especially from the 70s and early 80s, but they've started to grow on me, especially the rusticated ones.

pitchfork, thanks. The Winslow is an E grade and it really is a wonderful smoker that I have had for years. I am just so used to lighter pipes now that even though it is a full bend, it is tough to clench. It is great for holding as it has a great hand feel, but I just find myself not reaching for it like I used to. I used to smoke it a ton. The early Caminetto's are some of the best smoking pipes for the money on the estate market. Ones in real nice shape sell for around 125.00 usually and they smoke every bit as good as any Castello( not surprising because the owners got their start under Carlo Scotti) I have ever smoked and I have smoked my share of those. They have a wide open draw like the Castello's and they smoke cool and dry. I have two of those. I really should just send them in and have vulcanite stems put on, I would smoke them way more. I am honestly not a fan of their looks that much as rusticated pipes don't really do much for me, however once you smoke one you wouldn't care if it was bright pink, they smoke that well. The one in the pic is a KS Business shape 143, I forget the number on my other one. Here is a pic of my second one.

Thanks for that great info, Harris. The black Cam is really smart looking, by the way. Based on what you've said, I'll have to be on the lookout for older Caminettos -- often they are very reasonably priced.

pitchfork, my pleasure. I would look for the KS Business models which are the ones carved by Ascorti and Radice. If I see any in my searches I will pm you.

roth, do you know who made your Astley? It could be a Dunhill, Upshall or Charatan. From what I have read those three made most of the Astleys. I have a Dunhill made Astley Dublin that is a pretty good smoker.
Al, great classic looking Upshalls. I am sure they are great smokers, never had an Upshall that wasn't.
