What's Your Best/Favorite Pipe Under $175 New

Without even thinking twice it would be my Tsuge Tankard which now is approaching the 1000 smoke mark and is as fantastic as the day it was new.

I received a Rattray's Craggy Root 1/4 bent pot for Christmas, which, so far, has been amazing. Yes, it has the 9 mm filter, and the draw is as open as my best Castello. The pipe seems well engineered, has at least 1/3" thick chamber walls, and the Lucite bit is not too thick, making it comfortable to clench. I could find no flaws in it, even in the raw tobacco chamber. The pipe smoked wonderfully from the very first bowl, which was Solani blend 131. Not bad for less than $150.00.

I'd have to go with my Savinelli Duca Carlo Dublin. It's one of the only pipes I've bought new though. The best smoker in my collection is a Castello Sea Rock #17 that I paid much less than $175 for. They retail for more than $175 new, but since it was new to me when I got it that'd be my answer if estates count.

Well, this is the one I've kept coming back to for the past 30 years. I don't think I paid much more than $60.00 for it back then.

Although I've never spent as much as $175 on a pipe, quite a few of those I've had for a long time WOULD have cost more than that in today's $$$ .

That's where I'm at. I've got this really nice Stan straight grain 3/4 drop egg I won in a pipe smoking contest 30+ years ago - what would that cost, now? Or my Ser Jacopo Gepetto?

That Stan is my best smoker, but I have an old Comoy 3/4 drop billiard - again, 30+ years old, won in a pipe smoking contest- that's my number 2.

Damn, that's a tough question! As the majority of my pipes fall within that range it makes it very hard to pick just one! I guess at the moment I'd have to say my NOS Nording "925" Silver Series sandblasted straight billiard w/ silver band. I think I paid $65 for it.

Because its in the process of being handmade, I have not smoke it yet. However, I am very much so anticipating that it will be the 14" Strider briar with maple stem at $115:

Some of my favorites are Sav's, $60 - $90.00 range. Then I bought a couple Radices, like them a lot, but a bit more money. And all of them from sponsors of this site.

Reason why I posted this is because I thinned the herd by a couple and now have the "itch".

Have a DH I love so know I can say " Been there done that & bought a t-shirt."

Most of Trevor Talbert's Ligne Bretagne pipes can be had for under $175 and are superior smokers made from fine, aged briar.
Best bang for your buck available right now, in my opinion.

I'd have to say my best and favorite pipe under $175 would be my Peterson Rusticated Pipe of the Year 2011. It's a nice paneled semi-bent brandy that smokes wonderfully. Has a nice silver band that accents it nicely. I've never had a bad smoke with it.

No contest for me: I have a custom made Devil Anse by Eric Paulson that I bought in the fall for $125. Amazing smoker that is now my go to pipe.

A sandblasted L'Anatra Dublin with a natural finish. The cost new was $130 to $160--don't remember. Great smoker for any price.

tuold: What is the shape number on that lovely Comoys?
For myself, I don't buy many new pipes, so that narrows it down. I picked up two NOS pipes in January, it would be a toss-up between these two. A 2008 Tinsky Christmas pipe and an Ashton Old Church Rhodesian.

Its a tie......Peterson Dracula with system & 9mm filter(far right) & Peterson 317 Standard with system(far left)
They are both the best smoking pipes I have ever used; and I am also a bit particle since I bought them both at the Petersons store on Grafton street in Dublin Ireland.
