At first i noticed brands like Hearth and Home discontinuing their 16OZ tins. I was a big fan of Chatham Manor and when i finally finished my first tin of it and wanted to buy more, I was stunned to see that most of their stuff was discontinued with only a few buckets left. Now, I'm trying to buy another two tins of Plum Pudding from Seattle Pipe Club from P&C and I see they also discontinued that blend as well.

What's a new pipe smoker to do?

Buy what you like NOW. But also be open to discovering new stuff, and when you discover one you like, stock up for the cellar. Tobacco will never be cheaper than it is today (or was yesterday), and blends come and go all the time. And if you find one you reeeeealllly like, put out a call on the buy/sell subforum (once you've completed the basic requirements of time here and posts made, so that a bit of trust is established).

Sutliff closure hurt a lot of blends since they were making the many beloved lost discontinued blends.
Buy what ya like and try and put some away. Tobacco isn’t getting any cheaper. Legislation usually wants to increase taxes, etc….

If ya find something you like, cellar down on it. It may not be there when you want some more.

I second this. I started smoking pipes in 23 (let us forget the adolescent dalliance in 2015) and I was lucky to discover and stock up on certain Mac Baren offerings at that time. Just pull the financial trigger - within reason - and get a lot of what you like. If tastes change, you can always trade. As a relatively new forum member, I have had many a fine trade and purchase conducted with others here. Also, giving away pipe tobacco is sometimes its own reward, I have done this with many a pipe smoking buddy and it’s just one of the many things that make being a part of the online (or meat space) community very cool.

Damn I wish i would've known this earlier in my pipe smoking adventure. I did stock up on a lot of presbyterian tins because i heard whispers of it not being made in the future and I like to have it when typing. But, I missed out on getting more tins of Wildman for SPC and taste of summer from Sutlif

Where could I have seen information of Sutliff being closed? I wish I could've prepared more for this.

I guess buying more seems to be the general consensus on this issue either that or learning how to blend my own tobacco with C&D blending packs.

The closure of Sutliff was leaked about a year ago. The unknown question was how many blends would be discontinued by STG, and the result was all but a handful of goopers.
In the interim before Sutliff was killed off, a number of independent blenders who used their tobaccos stocked up so that they could continue to make their blends for a while longer.
Check out Watch City if you haven’t already.

I think every tobacco hoarder's origin story is that that one blend got discontinued or changed or otherwise hard to find... puffy
Yes I'm hoping i can get two packs of the upcoming GL Periti thanksgiving day cake they make every November 1st i want to at the very least give that a try before I see it go.

I think Seattle Pipe Club is making an announcement at the Las Vegas International Pipe Show.

Yes, it sucks immensely. But as @Chasing Embers points out, this is just par for the course in 2025.

Mac Baren and Sutliff were two of my favorites, so when I heard the first rumblings, I acted swiftly and to the greatest extent my budget would allow for. Cellar now, mourn later.

It could happen to any company at any time, so it's always best to hedge against both price increases and discontinuations. Either that, or log on to TinBids and bend over. 🤷‍♂️
