Whats up with pipes like this that screw in or have this weird insert? Are they lesser quality pipes or something?

Descriptions like "Wonderful Classic Durable Tobacco Smoking Pipe for smoking lovers! This tobacco pipe fits to use in any occasions." and a $15 price tag should have been your first clue.
This is trash made in China, not a real pipe.

Don't think I'd use that word "quality" to describe this pipe. I'd heed tokerpipes advice on this one.

it is probably made of plastic. A few years ago I made the mistake of getting something like this. It had a metal bowl liner lol.

Lesser quality? I wouldn't rate it anywhere near that high. You can spend a lot less on a Missouri Meerschaum and got a top-notch smoke.

A lot of pipes have screw in stems. Doesn't mean their inherently evil. Many older meers, kaywoodies, etc have screw in stems. I'm not a huge fan of them, but I've had a small exposure to them.
As far as the pipe/insert in the pic. Meh.

Look closer, I don't think that is a screw in. The "o" ring seals and drilling are supposed to make the smoke travel farther and therefore dissipate heat before it reaches your mouth. Basically a sales gimmick as it doesn't work. That theory has been tried many times over the years and no reputable manufacturer that I know of does make their pipes that way. The rest of the pipe is junk also.
