What's up with Peterson pricing?

I have a dz or so Pete's from a $50 tankard to a $250 Sherlock. Including St Pat's, Dracula and a Silver spigot. not a bad one in the bunch and most were bought online.
searching the usual 'estate' sites not many Pete's to be found and when someone sells a group of pipes here or across the street it's always the Pete's that sell first.

Reminds me of the never ending arguments over Martin vs Gibson acoustic guitars. Each camp will say the other guitars are crap, quality is suffering, don't make'em like they used to, etc. Meanwhile each company has been putting out fantastic instruments for almost two centuries. Companies that make bad products will go out of business very quickly, but the ones making good products will succeed. Peterson continues to succeed, and a few negative posts on a pipe smoking forum aren't going to change that.
