With XL pipes, about how long of a smoke would it be? The duration of a smoke has never really been an issue considering I smoke Churchills and the longer cigars at my local shop.

Length of smoke is going to depend on your smoking technique, what tobacco you are smoking, and how wet or dry it is. I have gone easily over and hour with a flake on a similar sized pipe.

How do you know you are off topic? When the original thread owner thanks you personally in a PM to be one of two persons answering his question. Come on, we can treat new forum members better!

My original question did get answered then I asked more because of my intense curiosity for this hobby. Every question I have asked has gotten answered and for that I am thankful. I am glad to have several experienced smokers take a part in mentoring myself in this intriguing and delightful hobby. I want to hear all of the advice there is so that I can have a better experience. I honestly hope to be a part of the next generation of pipe smoking enthusiasts.

A lot of people are suggesting cob pipes but I have been skeptic of them since I was a Boy Scout. I have always thought that they were more of a novelty than a functional pipe. I'm not saying that I won't get one to try to prove myself wrong. However, another question to pose to accompany the question that started this thread, what is the difference between the MM cob pipes and those sold for $5 at local shops? Aren't they both supposed to be made of corn cobs?

If the cobs are in fact not MM cobs (check for a sticker as posted above) they will have a lower quality standard such as improper curing or nasty varnishes. Doesn't necessarily mean you will get a bad one, but makes your chances of getting a good one a lot slimmer.

I will check when I go in tomorrow. I have made the decision to stay clear of brylon pipes due to the knowledge that its not actually wood. I am still curious as to why most will not suggest brylon.

First off, welcome to the forums! And welcome to the hobby.
IMO, it's all up to personal preference. I prefer Brigham pipes mainly because I know that's what my old neighbour has smoked for 50yrs (he smokes Grabows too and says they are comparable to Brighams but he like Brig's better) and two of my uncles smoked Brighams for 40yrs+/- and all three of them swore by them as good pipes. I own 5 Brighams, 5 Trypis Pipes and two MM Cobs. I like all my pipes and reguarly smoke all of them but the two cobs (I really don't like the taste they give off). I would suggest getting a nice pipe after you have learned more about the hobby and have decided if it's something you plan to stick with for many years to come. My theroy behind this is; you don't want to buy a really nice pipe that you really like and make a 'rookie' mistake and ruin it.
I belive that research and hands on practice of the new found knowledge can make anyone a 'master' of whatever subject is at hand. It all depends on the drive that that person has to learn and master new things. Asking questions and reading and watching videos and talking with other pipe smokers in your area (including pipe clubs and whatnot).
Do what makes you feel good and what you are comfortable with and you should have no problems enjoying this centuries old hobby.

I was wondering if that was the case. I was about to purchase a yello bole before I looked to see what they were made of. It said it was a blend of materials and I knew then that it wasn't what I was after if I were to be serious about this hobby. My problem was that I wanted one for all the wrong reasons. I wanted the Yeelo-Bole because I thought it was unique due to the coloration of the inside of the bowl. Am I the only one that has almost made that mistake starting out?

If you really fall in love with pipe smoking, you will surly be spending a lot on pipes and tobaccos, so until you know your taste and what kind of pipes catches your eyes, stick to the pipe you have...

I checked and it was a MM and for four dollars I refused to pass it up from all of the recommendations. I didn't see a point in waiting to break it in. The bowl got pretty warm. Warmer than my Grabows have ever gotten. What all could I be doing wrong? I smoked PA cherry vanilla that had been dried a bit.

Cobs do tend to get a bit warmer than briars, especially during the first smokes. Nothing to worry about there. Just make sure it's not too hot to hold for around a 5-second count.

If it is does that mean that my pipe is starting to burn through the inner wall of the pipe? Also My store owner doesn't know much about pipes but he tried selling me some screens. I went ahead and bought some because of the price (or lack there of). What exactly are they supposed to do?

Welcome youngpipe, I have been smoking a pipe for about 10 months now, I have purchased Grabows, Medicos, a couple estates 40+ Missouri Meerschaum cobs and 1 chinese cob(which lasted 3 smokes). Everyone of my best smokes have come from a MM Cob. Just my opinion but my thought is that I want to spend my monies finding the tobaccos that I enjoy rather than spending more than I feel I need to for the pipe, I truthfully can't imagine getting a better smoke from a pipe costing hundreds of dollars when I can spend $5-$20 on a great smoking pipe.

MM Cobs have been around for decades and are an American Icon IMHO.

Enjoy the Adventure and Happy Puffing

My opinion on that Peterson you linked to is that I would not buy it. P lip stems in my opinion do not give the best smoke possible. I am also not a fan of the system pipes. I would go with this pipe for brand new.

Savinelli in my opinion is a great starter pipe that will give you a good smoke and you can be assured the pipe is made well. My first pipe was a Sav and I still own it to this day. They use quality briar and are known for delivering a great smoke. I would not use the filter as the filter pipes smoke great without them.
roth made a great suggestion for estate pipes with Mike and Dave as both of those guys will never sell a pipe that is not high quality if you want to go the estate route.
