I can see how the poker shape might leave some cold. It's sort of a snowman pipe along with cobs, many of which share the shape with the tall cylindrical bowl. That's why others, like me, like it. It's basic and simple, and many versions take that simplicity to show off the grain or other aspects. One reason I like foggy's Dunhill poker is that it retains that Dunhill refinement but less of the exaggerated reserve ... if that makes any sense. No? Well something like that.

Here
I have two pokers.
They both smoke well and are decent clenchers.
It was the first shape that I specifically sought out after beginning to smoke pipe.

Oops. A 3rd I forgot about, a Stanwell 245 stored unsmoked from the crazy sale a while ago.

I've never seen a poker player using a pipe of this shape, nor have I ever seen one used as a poker in a fire, so I'm now curious as to how it was named...

Another classic poker in my collection. This was one of my first pipes and I have neglected it over the past couple of years due my interest in Italian and Danish pipes. This post stirred up good memories and I commissioned it back to active duty. It is a great pipe.

Pokers are sitters usually, but I really like my other shapes that are also sitters, including a billiard or two, a Dublin or two, and those wonderful brandy pipes by Peterson, the B11, once of the great under-appreciated shapes in the Pete line. I like 'em so well I bought two. It's so pleasant not to have to find a place to prop a pipe between lights.
