Snow is airborne, trees sleep and courageous lads are on an adventure on the sidewalk. Meanwhile, pipe smokers are as relaxed as ever, smoking a pipe and enjoying their new socks and ties. Some consider Christmas THE best time of the year to smoke a pipe.

So let's see, what are you smoking in these festive times?

I'll begin : I'm smoking MacBaren Three Nuns in my Peterson System Premier (shape 317, from 1974). Here's a photo!

I'm about to try a bowl of vintage 2013 Peterson Holiday Season. Twelve years ago I purchased a 100-gram tin of this mixture to enjoy as my yuletide smoke, but just couldn't make its flavor work despite trying a variety of pipes. As I recall, there was just too much cinnamon for my palate.

Accordingly, I put it in my cellar where it reposed, forgotten, in a dark corner until it was rediscovered a few days ago. I must say that Peterson's heavy clear plastic package and tin kept this tobacco in remarkable condition, and the aroma is simply heavenly! A pouch-type disc soaked in distilled water and inserted in the bag for a few hours brought the moisture level to near perfect.

It's a mild, but hazy, day here in Dogtown, so I'm off to the garage to give this mixture a second go in a Comoy's Tradition pot that I purchased from our ssjones. Wish me luck!

Addendum to my post above:

I've finished my bowl of vintage Peterson Holiday Season 2013 and all that I can say is WOW! but I'm not certain why. Is it because:
1. This mixture has aged for 12-years?
2. Is it because my palate is 12-years older?
3. Is it the estate Comoy's Tradition pot (Shape 126) that I purchased from ssjones and for which this was my inaugural bowl?

My best guess is that it is all three of these factors combined. Regardless, the stars aligned and the result was one of the most satisfying and enjoyable smokes I have had in a long, long time.

Merry Christmas everyone!
