I'm the youngster of the group and I'm in my mid 60s. A couple of the guys have lost their wives so we check in on them to make sure they're OK.
In general, we avoid topics that could cause conflict, namely, politics, occasionally we do end up talking about things like that. It's always very civil and respectful. One time I brought my son to sit in on the group(he is a cigar smoker) and he was truly amazed at the lives these guys have led. In fact, he just told me when he visits in March he'd like to go back. Every time I see these guys, my wife sends along something to give them. Sometimes it's cookies that she made and other times it's servings for a casserole. They also share things with me and each other. They all know that I like to restore old pipes so they often bring me ones that they had or found in a thrift shop. In fact, the oldest guy in the group didn't have a cell phone and lives alone. We encouraged him to get one and I sat with him and taught him some things. He now loves to play word games, and Google things. He also checks in with a daily text. But don't get me wrong, these guys are not feeble old men. It really is a special and unusual relationship. In fact, last week, I had a plumbing problem at my house and was sharing with them that the plumber couldn't make it for three days. That afternoon two of the guys showed up and fixed it. Pretty cool!
