For the past several years, a group of guys meet at our local B and M once a week(sometimes more) to solve the problems of the world. There are six of us in the core group with our ages ranging from 65 to 85. We are all serious pipe smokers and enjoy anywhere from 6 to 12 bowls a day. I could write a book about this cast of characters but that's not the purpose of this post.

Although we talk about everything, inevitably we talk a lot about pipe smoking. We figure between us all we have over 220 years of pipe smoking experience and here are some things that we have learned along the way. Of course your mileage may vary so it would be interesting to hear your thoughts as well

1.) Pipe smoking has become too fussy. Too many young pipe smokers read all of the conflicting information on the Internet and fall into analysis paralysis. In general stuff, it, light it and smoke it.

2.) Dry your tobacco and when you think it's dry enough dry it some more. In general, these guys think that dryer tobacco burns better, taste better and leads to less tongue bite.

3.) Smoking down to fine white ash is a unicorn that doesn't occur real often. These guys consider the tobacco at the bottom of the bowl to be a filter for the rest of the smoke so don't spend any effort for force lighting the tobacco at the bottom.

4.) Some of the guys used to favor pipes with big bowls so they could have a longer smoke. It seems like now they've decided that any bowl size is good and if they're smoking a smaller bowl, they just swab it out after one smoke is finished, reload, and go again.

5.) Most of the guys average 4 to 6 relight a bowl and sometimes many more depending on what they are doing. They talk about the old days when a bunch of guys smoked pipes at work and the click of a lighter was a very common sound. They are always saying that people get too caught up in how many times they have to light their pipe.

5.) Some of the guys used to do the old school thing of having one pipe and smoking it to death. Now they all have several pipes in their rotation. Most of them have a few Artisan pipes in the $250+ range but the majority of their pipes are cheaper factory pipes. They all agree that most pipes smoke the same, and that there is too much emphasis placed on high dollar pipes.

6.) They all agree that pipe smoker should smoke with they like and not listen to the pressure that can sometimes happen in this community. In fact, a couple of them smoke only aromatics and one guy only smokes Carter Hall, consuming about a pound a month.

7.) This last topic comes up most frequently. Don't listen to the anti-smoking Nazis that try to lump pipe smoking in with everything else. Pipe smoking is a great hobby and lifestyle so be bold about it. Smoke your pipe in public(of course, being considered of those around you) and wear your pipe smoking like a badge of honor. They agree it's a time honored past time and to keep it alive you need to do it around others.

I'm not saying that we have everything figured out, but we are the very definition of Codgers. It'd be really interesting to hear your thoughts on these insights.

There's nothing about any of this with which I would disagree. The degree of fussiness and worry that has entered into the pipe smoking population is nutz and I attribute much it to the deleterious effects of social media where the most ignorant can become the gold standard.

I agree with the statement that most pipes smoke about the same. but if someone wants something prettier to smoke, why not? And, it should also be said that there are high end artisan carvers who's pipe internals, particularly a gentle funneling of the airway involves a bit more work and is "supposed" to offer some sort of improvement. But that's the nature of the hobby, lots of subjectivity about fairly objective stuff.

Thanks for the post!

I totally agree with you about Artisan pipes. It is truly an art form, and I have collected several simply because I like to look at them. But don't worry, they get their fair share of smokes.

Never heard of flavoring a bowl. I wouldnt know where to begin.
Im not a die hard pipe smoker who can smoke a bowl for hours
Im selling all my big bowl pipes. Luckily I dont have too many.
I see "favor pipes with big bowls" but I can't spot flavoring bowls. In any case, flavoring or seasoning chambers is a thing with people who dedicate pipes to a specific blend. The idea is that traces of that blend linger in the pipe between smokes and despite cleaning. These traces reinforce the blend when smoked in that pipe, offering a superior, more detailed experience of that blend. It actually does work, but I'm far too lazy these days to do the "one pipe to one blend" thing.

Spot on! Well said! In agreement with you and your pals. Yes many have made it “too fussy” with spreadsheets and analysis, but at least they are intrigued and involved with our hobby. Many people go overboard with their hobbies. But kudos, all of which you wrote has come true for me too, full circle, over 43 years.

Every time a new pipe smoker comes into the shop and we are there. We invite him to sit with us. Our basic messages always the same. Don't overthink it just enjoy it and ask questions when you need to.

When I think back of my first 20 years smoking a pipe, horribly, ignorantly, burning my mouth and tongue. Giving up for weeks, months, and years at a time, but always returning. Because I enjoyed it, and loved the experience, tactile, aromas, relaxing, everything. I had no mentors, guides, or resources back then. Did not frequent pipe shops other than to pop in, buy a sweet-smelling blend from a big jar, and leave. If only I would have paused, sat in, and learned from a group of six codgers!

Yes. It is so helpful. What are you guys are cigar smokers so we follow their cues. We invite them to sit with us and chat and we tell them if they have any questions to feel free to ask. That almost always leads to interesting conversations About our hobby.

Agree with all with a caveat.

Some of the guys used to favor pipes with big bowls so they could have a longer smoke.

the majority of their pipes are cheaper factory pipes.
Factory pipes rarely come in a size that I can safely hold without dropping so the giant artisans are mostly what I own.

lump pipe smoking in with everything else.
Nothing wrong with that, I enjoy most tobacco products. I've never considered pipe smoking to be a hobby but it does allow me to smoke hands free while indulging hobbies.

Smoke your pipe in public(of course, being considered of those around you) and wear your pipe smoking like a badge of honor.
I've lived in a tobacco friendly environment for years no one really bats an eye when they see me with a pipe.

I agree with the premise pipe smoking isn't really a hobby. Buying pipes and lots of blends IS a hobby.

Oklahoma is the same. Lots of people here still smoke cigarettes. No one cares that you're smoking a pipe or cigar unless you're blowing it their face...then you're just a jerkwad anyway.
