I have not read entire thread but just noticed some to and fro spat about Gawith.

Mr and Mrs Gawith, or whomever is in charge, please just ignore all of this chatter and make us some more Best Brown’s. Gotta have more..

Woo maybe they'll release a boot polish blend just for you! I'm sorry, I jest. Such low hanging fruit, I couldn't resist.

Let me just say, I'm typing this as I'm smoking a bowl of Bob's Chocolate Flake from 2021, it's delicious with some black coffee. But I do miss the old Lakeland GAS Gawith used to put out, pre-2018/2017 maybe.

Some of the comments about the Gawith rep are getting very nasty and personal. That's unnecessary and kind of ugly to be honest.

But if he or she does not actually smoke pipe tobacco, then their participation on the forum can only be to sell product.

All I'm saying is I'd prefer my car mechanic to have driven a car before, so when I talk to them about the car we can relate on specifics.

And that's the issue. You have no frame of reference for the product you shill. To you, it's just marketing and a way to make money off of something your family created. Your facts are what you read.

Congrats on being named Managing Director with no real experience in the field! Nepotism signs another paycheck. You should've stuck with law because you like to belittle people and their opinions (esp when it affects your bottom line)

How would you know anything about the subjectivity of how a blend tastes when you don't smoke a pipe? Marketing 101 at University?

And what exactly is the 'old Lakeland'?
And no she is not here to sell, she is here to answer questions, put rumours to bed etc.....no need to sell, we can't keep up with demand as it is.
Your mechanic does not need to be able to drive the car to be able to fix it, know how the parts all work, know where to order parts from. No maybe they can't chew the cud with you about how great it handles at 70mph but surely more important that he/she knows how to make it work so it can reach 70mph?

Well I started smoking a pipe last winter because I had quit smoking cigarettes and I started having nostalgic memories of my grandfather. He smoked a medico or Dr Grabow and I only seen 3 tobacco blends he enjoyed 1 Sir Walter Raleigh 2 Sir Walter Raleigh Aeromatic and Half n Half. So those were the only pipe tobaccos that I knew existed. Boy was I wrong! So when I started down the ever expanding road of blends I came across Sutliff Victorian Match and fell head over heels and now I find out that it’ll not be made anymore so I bought as much as I could. I have since been working my way through other blend and types and loving it thoroughly

Starting to Get Obsessed
I've been smoking a pipe for a little over a year now. I have yet to buy a second tin of anything.

This is partly because I want to try everything once before I smoke a second tin of anything, but also because I have yet to have my socks knocked off by anything AMAZING!

I get it that a big part of this might just be me developing my palate. I'm fine with that.

But I have yet to find something that could become an "everyday smoke" or the tin that will cause me to go buy five pounds more of it. Usually I enjoy the first several bowls of a new tobacco, but by the time I get through the 2oz tin, I'm read to be done with it and move on.

What about you? What was the first tin that caused you to go buy five pounds? (Or at least, as many tins of the tobacco that you could afford in one go).

Fairly new to pipes (former cigar smoker) but when I started trying different blends, I was blown away by GLP’s Sixpence and Quiet Nights and ended up buying a pound of each and jarring them to age.

And what exactly is the 'old Lakeland'?

Pre-merger both GH&co and Samuel Gawith's lakeland blends had a much stronger top note. Both on the nose and to taste the tonka bean/granny panties/floral soap flavor was much stronger.

I have some tinned stuff from 2014 and maybe even up to 2016 where the Gawith Hoggarth blends featured a much more prominent Lakeland topping. Even in blends like Bob's Chocolate but especially in blends like scented Dark Flake etc.

And no she is not here to sell, she is here to answer questions, put rumours to bed etc.....no need to sell, we can't keep up with demand as it is.

No, I agree. She's been very helpful with the information she was able to share, lots of members (myself included) are very interested in the blending/casing process, so that's been helpful.

But there's no need to pretend the job isn't PR/marketing in nature. And given that she doesn't smoke a pipe, the type of questions she can answer is limited, especially for a discussion forum on pipe smoking.

That's my whole point: I'm telling you I feel a little tail kick taking corners at 70mph but all you're saying is no no, the engine, wheels, seats and dashboard is all there, it shouldn't be handling any different.

All I'm saying is I'd prefer a mechanic who drives and likes to drive.

Well once again nothing happened post merger (merger was at start of 2015) to change blends. Some of the guys making SG blends came from the SG factory with some of the machinery and they did their thing in the GH factory. The guys making the GH blends carried on making the GH blends as they always had for 20 years before then. And this was the case up until the recent move to the new factory but it's now far more 'melded' as the younger generation of workers have learnt the process and people progress to different roles.

And no this is not a PR/Marketing job as my 'job' is actually running the factory and managing the factory, where as I just sit down to pop on the forums in the evenings when I have a chance and answer any questions. We do not have someone doing PR. And has often been pointed out to me in less than nice terms - my PR apparently sucks!!!

No I don't smoke a pipe. I am therefore not here to tell you what you should or should not like, how something tastes or smokes. I can tall you about the process, the history, the factory, the business in general, regulatory points to some extent etc...I am on the factory floor day in, day out, heavily involved in everything from leaf through the production to it leaving the factory all packed and on a pallet.

I am afraid you are stuck with me. So if you are looking for a mechanic to drive your car, you are going to have to change to a new mechanic.

Just now caught this thread. (The title never interested me so I didn't read it when it started. Today's activity made me curious, though)

Bloody hell.

Why is it that wherever you go, whatever you do, no matter the subject or activity, there is always that single digit percentage of humans who are passionately uninformed, incapable of understanding anything except how an event or circumstance affects them personally, and then never tire of standing in the middle of the street raging about it when unhappiness is that effect?

The worst part is the Dunning-Kruger Effect is unfixable by definition. No amount of explanation or instruction or debate will satisfy them.

Which is 95% of the population these days.

Big part of why I don't participate too much with forums (not just here, anywhere).

The first thing I bought a pound of was MacBaren Old Dark Fired. However, the first and only time I hit the five pound mark was Sutliff Match Victorian.

Are folks still posting on topic on this one?
If so: Sunday Picnic and Skiff. Only two blends I would ever need to be truly happy with a pipe, the rest is luxurious variety.
I still have not tried Skiff but its in my wishlist.

Yea the most I have ever bought is 1/2 pound and its ODF also.
I bought mine back in 2015 and still have a good portion of it. My taste changed and it sat in jars until being transferred to Mylar. I am thinking this fall will be a good time to revisit and see how it’s aged.
