Ha, I started off w/Captain Black White/Original. I later discovered that Lane RLP-6 was very similar, so I purchased a couple pounds. That was a long time ago, and while my taste has changed, I still have some of it jarred for old times’ sake.
As did I…Way back when, I bought McClelland 5100 in five pound bags.
Couldn't agree more....VINEGAR!!!!...picked up 2 of the new 7oz tins last fall....opened one a few weeks ago...put my nose to the tobacco and recoiled, eyes widened , "What the hell is.....". Took a second sniff...VINEGAR. Laid it out on a cookie sheet to air out...waited till the next morning and loaded up a pipe....First draw...Vinegar, chemicals...bent over the cookie sheet...still smelled like vinegar....Maybe, it's a bad batch....Started looking at tobacco reviews on line and all were experiencing the same thing from SWR Regular purchased during the fall of 2024. I have smoked this for over 55 years...it is my go to blend...What have they done?...What fools these mortals be.Sir Walter Raleigh (regular). Glad I did because the new (STG) stuff is unsmokeable.
I sent STG a formal complaint and got a canned response. Leonard W. from STG was on here earlier and said he was aware of the complaints and had referred it to their QC department or whatever. That was months ago. Apparently they don’t know their noses from their behinds or just don’t give a damn. It isn’t that hard to understand SWR has changed CONSIDERABLY and is nothing like the former production.Couldn't agree more....VINEGAR!!!!...picked up 2 of the new 7oz tins last fall....opened one a few weeks ago...put my nose to the tobacco and recoiled, eyes widened , "What the hell is.....". I was exactly the same for about three years, I wanted to try everything. Smoked some pretty disappointing stuff, some ok stuff, some great stuff. It’s taken a while but I now know the varieties I enjoy the most and am only just beginning to hone in on the tins I really like. I’m down to a rotation of about 4 that hit the spot, but foolishly bought multiple of things I don’t want to smoke. So, I am now left with a cellar of stuff I don’t want! Don’t make my mistake - keep it to one tin at a time, keep notes/scores and then revisit your top scorers later. All part of the fun though.
The Gawith 'rep' is the Managing Director and part owner and simply points out facts. Don't need to smoke a pipe to run the business. The Gawith rep would argue with members too about a lot of the nuances and then months later revealed she didn't even smoke pipes![]()

No, she was stating that recipes and processes have not changed. How another person tastes a blend is totally subjective. Facts. She was arguing about blend tastes over time having never smoked a pipe is all I'm getting at. And that's facts too.
