Being British, I'm rather more modest and think,"oh, I'll purchase another smidgen of that" when I find an agreeable blend. Maybe a couple of tins. Unless it's Cabbie's, of course, when all bets are off and restraint is lost to the four winds. Not 5lbs though, which would be over £1100.
Yes, the price of buying 5lb in Oz at current prices of @AUD155 per 2oz don’t bear thinking of.
Unless one wins big in the lottery or Lotto
But even then …………

Sometimes I would take whole packs of mb# Capstan blue and gold, and mb# virginia flake, 50 gram tins, in packs of 5 tins. Sometimes I would buy 30 or 40 tins at a shot. Since I bought them at a good price at the local tobacconist. I think almost two kilos per purchase. Crazy, hahahaha.

Not 5 pounds but I've done bulky buys (1 pound or more at a time) of SG StJames Plug, G&H Bosun Cut Plug, TAK 16/5 Der Neue, F&T Cut Blended Plug, Peterson Nightcap, Dan Tobacco StBernard Flake and Old Ironsides, G&H Dark Flake Scented, Mac Barren Old Dark Fired, Synjeco Holker Twist, Huber Golden Flake...there are many stellar tobaccos out there!

Wow. The first three responses all included McClelland 5100.

I wish it was still available so I could try it.

For those who smoked it, is there anything close to it?

Its description on various sites sounds a bit like Three Nuns (which, I must say, is a tin I enjoyed very much).
Many have tried to copy Mike & Mary McNeils recipe and process for cresting their Virginia tobacco....none have succeeded. Their Virginia had what has been described as having a BBQ, ketchup and vinegar aroma.....all are accurate.
For many people McClelland Virginia was the best. Not just sinse it's demise, it was extremely popular for years. Unfortunately Mike & Mary chose not to sell or share their process/recipe as of yet.....and I respect them for that.
They said the Virginia they used for years was no longer available, so they don't want an inferior product being produced. I believe this also was part of the reason they closed up shop.
Or so the lore goes.........just kidding, there are places out there where Mike & Mary have shared this information. :)
I'm planning on opening a jar of 5100 soon. I will send you an ounce or so.

If guess the moral of the story is to go deep on what you like while it’s there. There have been plenty mentioned that are still in production.
As for me, after seeing one of my favorites going extinct-I’m glad I was able to buy a few years’ worth of I smoke it quite a bit, or a couple decades of I smoke it once in a while. The experience has taught me it would behoove me to go deeper on things I’d be upset if they went away, but I’m not going to break the bank for a blend.
I may start buying more of, and more variety because I’m more afraid of tobacco sales going the way of the dodo from regulation and I hope to enjoy my pipes for a long time.

“Tobacco will never be cheaper or more prevalent than it is today.”
-act accordingly, whatever that means to you.
100% agree.
Ive never bought 5 pounds of anything, but I do stock up on ones I don't want to go without.
I have many blends where I buy a pound every year or so.
For instance.....I have MacB VA#1 jarred from 2010, 2012, 2015, 2019 and 2024. I have 5100 from 2008, 2010, 2012......

Well two….
First 5 pound bag I bought was a 5lb bag of “Johnny apple seed” chew from the Gatlinburlier.
Smoking tobacco was Sutliff RC-1 and it wasn’t 5 lbs it was 20 pounds….followed by Mac Baren plumcake.

No.
It is a life-changing experience that only those who have 5 pounds of it can relate to. We refer to those unfortunate enough to be SOL as “them” (with a small “t”). Did I tell you that, after buying 5 pounds on 5100, I won the lottery, cured cancer and started dating all of the 2024 SI swimsuit models?

Woods is referring to the bikinis, not who was in them.

For me the "aha" tobacco was Arango Balkan Supreme, and I almost didn't post because I want more for me, dammit! I could definitely smoke this for weeks on end and be happy. But I'm still tasting my way through a lot of English and Balkan blends, so it may not stay on top.
