My two cents:

If you want to build your Virginia cellar, go buy a few pounds each of Sutliff 507-C Virginia Slices and Stokkebye Luxury Navy Flake before doing anything else. Jar them up and forget about them. They are inexpensive, readily available, and very good (especially with 2 or 3 years of age). Anyone who likes Virginias will be happy to have a nice stash of these put away. They are not my favorites, and there are many other blends that I think are superior, but these are rock solid and will pad out your cellar nicely. Then take your time trying the “better” blends to find the ones you like and to throw some $$ at stocking them up (see the fine recommendations from the other posters).

Newminster 400 is probably another one to put on the don’t-think-just-do list, but I’ve never had it, so I can’t say for sure.

Lot's of good recommendations here and plenty I'd love to try.

One that has not been mentioned is Formers Birds Eye Flake. It's a mild VaPer.
Although Orlik Golden Sliced is one I'd be content to smoke all day, I think FBEF is even better.

The Rattray's three sister blends, Hal O The Wynd (not wind...wind, like you wind a watch) Old Gowrie and Brown Clunee aren't straight VAs, but perfect examples of using Perique and DFK as true condiments to exentuate the VAs, which are outstanding in those blends. Wait, no they're terrible. Don't bother.
