I know that many of you like the Savinelli 320, so I bought one for myself. I plan to break it in this weekend.
What type of tobacco goes best in one? What do you smoke in yours?

Stan, I'm sure others with better palates than mine can give you more quality advice, but I smoke everything in my 320. For me, everything means mostly Virginia's and Va/Pers with the occasional Latakia blend. I would assume the consensus is going to suggest the bowl shape is conducive to Latakia blends, but my Virginia's smoke just fine in my 320. It's just a great performing pipe in my humble opinion.

My 320 Gauis loves FVF, and it's dedicated to that blend. I'm sure Saint James Flake would do equally well. My unfinished 320 likes VaPers.

VA Flakes are quite nice.
If you live in Colordao I would suggest trying out some Island Sweet Skunk or some Bubba Kush.

My 320 Siena is dedicated to Delicate English blends like EMP or Standard Mixture Mellow
Once smoked University Flake in it, that was a fine, but long smoke.

You're thinking of the Sav 420 ;)
My 320 isn't dedicated to one type of tobacco but I have found the open draw is great for chunkier balkans.

My 320 sings with blends that contain Latakia. Although burleys with a wider cut will smoke just as good. Smoking some C&D's Billy Budd in my 320 as I type and it's just singing.

'Don't have a 320, but in my wide chambered authors, princes and pots, I like to let blends with more different kinds of tobacco show off -- like ray47 with Billy Budd, PC's Chestnut tub tobacco, Dunhill 965, Nat Sherman 536 for mild and refined, Russ O.'s experimental Balkan M61 (if you picked up some of that), and similar blends with four or more different kinds of tobacco.

I wanted mine to smoke VA/VaPer's but it just didn't work out well for me. Mine prefers Balkan's in it. I say start with a VA blend and if it doesn't work out for you move on to the next genre until you find a tobacco that works well for your smoking habits.

I vote for Latakia blends. Burning more tobacco at once means more consistent flavour when you have a lot of variety in a blend.
Also aromatics are good in a wide bowl, though the only blends that I normally use separate pipes for are Latakia and Aromatic blends. VA/Aro is fine and Lat/VA is fine, but Lat/Aro just seems to clash a bit (I'm talking about stuff like Frosty Mint).

I just picked up a savinelli 320ex Hercules and I smoked Balkan sasieni in it and also Bengal slices so far. I liked the nice wide bowl on it for complex Latakia blends. I used to use pokers and what not but have recently switched those pipes to VA. I smoked a tin of Germaine brown flake in less then two weeks. For some reason the deep but narrow bowl just worked well with that blend. IMO a wider bowl allows other leafs in complex Latakia blends to shine. Penzance for example I get more oriental used and even EMP more oriental forward I feel smoking it in a pot bowl so to speak compared to narrow its more Latakia forward. I think it's trial and error for some pipes I have blends specific to it. Burleys I enjoy in cobs the best but have some fishtails that the burleys shine in.

Thanks for all the feedback. I suspected that the answers would go across the entire spectrum and of course they do.
I think that I will start with a few bowls of Chestnut (thanks mso), and then go from there. I may then see what it is like with some VA's before I hit it with some latakia and end up with Bengal Slices. Once I smoke heavy latakia blends, my pipes tend to become dedicated. I'll try not to burn any bridges to it becoming a Virginia pipe yet.
