Hypothetical question here: What if someone gave you a pipe for gift, but it isn't something that you'd really like in your rotation. Do you regift it, sell it, bin it, etc.?

I guess it all depends on who gave you the pipe. Wife, girlfriend, you'd better keep it. Coworker who will never see your collection, put it up for sale. You might give it a try just to see if you like it. Maybe it will surprise you. I agree with @ashdigger, once its in your hands, you own it, and can do with it as you please.

I'm still in the acquisition/exploration phase of my pipe smoking, so I'd add it to my rotation regardless. That aside, I have no qualms about regifting or selling something if I know I'm not going to use it. I rarely throw anything away.

If you don't like it, respond to the gifter and ask them if they have something nicer they could send. LOL I have hesitated with giving away pipes because they are personal. I agree with ash, once gifted, it's the recipient's property to do with as they please. I also agree with @reloader . Dependent upon the gifter, you may wish to exercise some discretion. I know I wore some really ugly ties my Daughter gifted me when she was young.

In a way this plays into an old cigar discussion and what it boiled down to was when you gift someone a cigar it’s no longer yours it’s theirs and if they want to dip that 1980s Cuban Davidoff in cheap swill rum to “flavor it” that’s their choice. (I was still pissed and swore never to gift him a really good stick again because that was my option) 😂

I've gifted a few estate pipes and whatever they do with it once it's in their hands, I don't care, it's theirs now.

I've been gifted pipes...a birth year Dunhill, a Peterson Christmas pipe and a Mr. Brog from my grandson, these are pipes I'll never dispose of. These were gifts that the person put the time and effort to gift to me, I'll cherish them.

If someone is kind enough to swing for the fences and gets me a decent tobacco pipe, I'm going to keep it and smoke it, aesthetics be damned. If it is truly crap, I'll keep it tucked in a drawer somewhere. I usually abhor clutter, but man, if someone was cool enough to indulge me in my preferred vice, I will simply accept gracefully and make due.
