I had a quick browse of old tins on ebay and just some of the names were:

Players Whiskey Flake
Loewe 58 Smoking Mixture
Mullins & Westley Ltd Crusting Cake (love the sound of that one)

I grew up in the UK (1970s) and St Bruno & Condor were the ones I remember the most (TV commercials). Presbyterian might have been a bit more upmarket though.
