Dunhills are probably the only brand where all pipes (not just those with hallmarked silver or gold bands) can be pretty accurately dated down to the year.
Though newer, artisans like Sordini and Weaver stamp the year on every pipe.

To value a used Dunhill check the price of a new one, same shape, finish and size. A used one is worth a little less than half if in excellent condition. Beware of the older Dunhills. They may be worth more to collectors, but are possibly oversmoked.

Always suspicious of way underexposed images on for sale sites.

$99?
The second one is in real need of cleaning, but seems to have gone for about $60.00

Back when I first started reading all the knowledge drops on this forum (these forums?) I 'gleaned' that some of the older briar was desirable and especially certain brands and years of production.

I knew nothing of the sport, other than tongue bite, corn cobs and captain black.

Once I started to pick up speed, I started acquiring inexpensive smokers on the auction site.

So...of course, these discussion threads had alerted me to the desirability and collectibility (a new word, I guess)of the Dunhill brand.

I won a bid for a 1954 Bent Shell for less than $70.00. The only catch was that the stem was a replacement.

I spent (somewhat foolishly) more for a 'certified Dunhill replacement stem' than I did for the pipe.

Still...for around $150.00 total...I've learned some, and I do have a very nice smoking pipe out of it all.

Here is a beautiful '66!

I just really have a hard time dropping 300 bones on a pipe! I mean, it seems so extravagant. Still, it is pretty though!

It is the best looking of the current lot. One in the mix appears to have cracks inside the bowl.
How can one be sure that it is all original? I normally buy $20 - $50 kaywoodies so this would be a big step up for me. Of course the practical side of me says that pipe would be lunch for a month...

That pipe has some great looking wood, but I wouldn't pay the asking price for it. If you look at the stem/shank juncture, the fit is off........ I think the stem has been overly buffed, it appears smaller than the shank. Also, looks to me like it may have been reamed a little heavy handed.......... Just my opinion mind you, not trying to rain on anyone's parade.

That birthyear pipe will come, patience is key............... :puffy:

Thank you! See this is a prime example of what confuses me. The pipe is gorgeous, listed as a buy it now, relatively the same price as the others that don't look as nice or well kept - but no takers. So I think to my self... What is wrong here??
I will keep looking. Maybe one of our members will take pity on me and offer up a '66 at a fair price point

Don't forget to check pullers brier and mkelaw pipes. They seem to be pretty reasonable on their estates and they don't operate under the buyer beware BS that you run into on ebay. You also will not have to worry about a bidding war. I buy from them on a regular basis and never any issues.

Randelli, looks like a nice pipe, but it also looks like 1956. Have a close look here...

1961-70 ...with the line under the suffix number omitted. From 1965-70 the size of the suffix number is the same as the D in ENGLAND.
