My favourite sci-fi/fantasy books were the Helliconia Spring, Summer and Winter trilogy by Brian Aldiss. I think they could be a great TV series. In a sense, this was part of the story - that there was a satellite orbiting the planet relaying the events over hundreds of years as a reality TV show to people on Earth. Aldiss built a whole world - ecosystem, history and politic - in those books.

An HBO version of the Sword of Truth novels. Not some PBS daytime show that dumbed down literally everything about the first novel. (actually looking up the show it was a Disney ABC show... which would explain the dumbing down)

Huntertrw, that is brilliant. I don't know why that never occurred to me. Slippery Jim would make a perfect protagonist for a long form television series.
Let me throw out the Titus Crow books as another series that could make an excellent tv show. They're about fighting Lovecraftian mythos monsters with super science.

+1 for redoing Dresden. They really need a solid budget and solid production to make that story work. The mental visuals from Butcher's writing style are pretty damn good.
The View From The Mirror Quartet by Ian Irvine. Rock solid fantasy told in a slightly different manner, and personally, my favorite classic fantasy story of all time.
I wish Hollywood and the bible thumpers hadn't wrecked The Golden Compass also. If someone with some vision had gotten ahold of The His Dark Materials Trilogy, it could have been a phenomenal films series.
