Actually, just remembered I once had to go 9 days without a pipe. In the hospital for 9 days for cardiac by-pass surgery some 8 years ago. Now that was Not a fun experience. Resumed smoking soon as I got out, though the anesthesia affected my sense of taste for several months thereafter.

Its a tough go but letting it rest up for a week is a good idea. I don't normally like to give my doctors carte blanche I think in this case its the prudent thing to do.

Good luck with the healing. Whenever, I need to do any healing in the mouth, I take a break from smoking. It allows the best conditions for that healing to happen as efficiently as possible.

Ive had a coupla teeth pulled. I just wet a tea bag and chomp on it over the tooth hole and smoke away. No problems. They say that nicotine causes all kinds of healing issues but I haven't found that to be the case with me. The coffee is fine as long as it's lukewarm. You don't want anything hot dissolving the blood clot. After a week I stop using the tea bag, once the extraction site has firmed up a bit. The tannins in the tea help stem bleeding and soothe the site, too.

They're warning you about dry socket, which is terrible. It's truly the most painful thing I've ever experienced, and I've papercut the webs between my fingers, so I know. Here's how you get dry socket: eat chips and dip the night after an extraction. That'll pull the blood clot right out. Clove oil on a Qtip does wonders.

Im not a doctor or dentist, but I do perform shade tree dentistry and amputation, pretty cheap.

Yup, dry socket is something to avoid at all costs, and I reckon that's the main issue with the prohibition: hot liquids would mess with the clot and the sucking motions done when smoking could dislodge it and cause it to fall off and out—not good. That's also why they contraindicate any kind of sucking motions whilst you're healing.

Heck, if they give you antibiotics as infection prophylactic the alcohol might be contraindicated too.

Just soldier on and you'll be able to smoke more worry free later.

Homoeopathic Arnica, @ 12C or 30C, helps with the post-operatory pain and speeds up healing.

The longest I've ever gone without smoking after a tooth extraction, was half a day. And that was after having 7 pulled at once. Any other dental work I'm smoking while leaving the lot.

I did smoke like a chimney after severally impacted wisdom tooth extraction. No issues for me. But, yeah, big warning about doing so. I would listen to your doc. I mean, keep going back to him or her for repeat visit won't be fun. Unless of course, it's a hot mama and has really warm hands and likes sharing laughing gas.
