62 years ago tonight (9-9-56), Elvis appeared for the first time on The Ed Sullivan Show. Ed wasn't there, he'd been in a car accident. Actor Charles Laughton was filling-in as host. The program was broadcast from New York, but, as Elvis was in California filming his first movie, they had an audience in a Hollywood studio, and linked it to New York.

And, yes, I was sitting on the floor, in front of our 17" RCA Black & White TV, watching Elvis.

62 years ago tonight (9-9-56), Elvis appeared for the first time on The Ed Sullivan Show.

Thanks for the historical nugget there Dino. In Gregg Allman’s autobiography he mentions how his mother had to take a job at NAPA (auto parts) after his father was murdered (would have been early ‘50s) and upon seeing Elvis on TV the first time she recognized him as a delivery boy who at one time had delivered some parts to the location she worked at.
