Jay, the Minutemen were an American punk band from California in the early 80s. But they were so much more than a punk band. I don’t know many people who like them but those who do LOVE them.

Sunny Cornwall, UK.
Cheers for that John. I listened to some of the clip Mayfair posted...not sure they're quite my cup of tea. As regards punk, when I think of punk I think Sex Pistols, The Damned and early Clash, this sounded much 'tamer'.
Regards,
Jay.

Yes Jay punk has come to be used to describe a very wide range of musical styles. That first wave of British punk has always been my favorite. To this day the Clash is still my favorite band and probably always will be. One of my biggest regrets is never seeing them play live.

A fellow member just reminded me of a quote from from Mike Watt (Minutemen bassist) that I think helps clarify things....

You said it. I always thought of it as more an attitude and pushing conventions more than a musical style.
That first wave of British punk...

Even though Mr. Lydon would disagree with me, I consider The Ramones to be the first.

I once heard a great quote that the early British punk was political rebellion, whereas the early American punk was a musical rebellion.

Chicago
I went to see Andras Schiff play with and conduct the Chicago Symphony Orchestra on Friday. The program included Haydn, Bartok, Bach, and the Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 1. It was a magnificent concert.

Here's a 3 minute snippet of the final movement of the Beethoven:

and, here's the entire concerto (37 min.) with Schiff conducting from the piano (if you listen to nothing else, you gotta here the cadenza at about 13:00 in):
