Today is George Brunies birthday (1902-1974). He was a Jazz giant, "King of the Tailgate Trombonists." An original member of the New Orleans Rhythm Kings, who were among the earliest recorded jazz musicians, he spent much of his life in Chicago. From the 1950s until the mid 60s, he was a regular performer at the 1111 Club, on Chicago's North Side. The club was just down the block from the grocery store in which I worked through high school and college.
I knew George, as he was a regular customer at the store. Although I never saw him at the club, (I wasn't old enough to get in), we often spoke about jazz and its history. When he passed, I went to his wake. A genial man, with a great sense of humor, and an incredible musician.
Here is a clip from Al Hodes 1968 TV show "Jazz Alley" as the group, Art Hodes on piano, George Brunies on trombone, Nappy Trottier on trumpet, Jimmy Grenato on clarinet and Truck Parham on bass, plays "I've Found A New Baby"

And, here's George, hamming it up, in a 1938 performance of "At The Jazz Band Ball" with Bobby Hackett, trumpet, Eddie Condon, guitar, and Pee Wee Russell, clarinet
