This time of year, when the sun sets sooner, the leaves fall from the trees, the sky's become gloomy and grey, and the weather turns cold; I usually find myself listening to a lot of Doom Metal and Black Metal. This past week I've been listening to:

Pink Floyd the final cut. In my opinion Roger Waters best work with the band and much stronger than The Wall with it's message. Beautiful album from song one to the end.

Listening to "Das Rheingold" at the Met. This is the fabulous first entry into Wagner's Ring Cycle.

These operas culminate in the final destruction of the gods in the fourth opera. The operas are in German so it takes a little getting used.

It's been a while since I listened to this slice of heaven.

Just watched the "Die Walkure" which is the second of four operas that Wagner did in his Ring Cycle. This is the story of Wotan, Brunnhilde, and the Walsung (two children of Wotan). When you hear the famous "Ride of the Valkyries" you're ready to go to war. It was used in Coppola's movie "Apocalypse Now" in the scene where Robert Duvall swoops in on a Viet Namese village leading 9 helicopters in an attack. This opera doesn't end well for anyone. Three hour and 45 minutes longs in three acts.
