I think there is a distinction between growth or improvement as opposed to mere change for change's sake. I think the postmodern movement includes more of the latter than the former.
That is an opinion mot based on reality. Go to an art fair, check etsy, heck check out what passes for galleries now. You not find very many bananas. You will most likely find more of those things you mentioned that you do like. I’ll bet money on it.

Maybe, but providing a space for that art allows new evolutionary takes on art to develop. A few of those branches will eventually take root and become standard so to say.

Good art? To me, something that elicits a strong reaction, even if that reaction is simply awe at the expertise used to create the piece. It isn’t kitschy, and is as original as a piece of art can be. If not in subject matter, then in execution.
I really like the Italian Renaissance artists, for their attention to realistic detail as well as some of the symbolism, and I like the Italian Baroque artists for their use of dramatic lighting. Caravaggio is one of my favorites, and a prime example of the use of dramatic lighting:

I go to galleries all the time. I'm on the board of directors of a local artist nonprofit. Most of their work is stuff I like a lot. I just object to all the crap being jammed into the public eye as previously discussed.

And by "postmodernism" I am referring to far more than just art and really going beyond the scope of this subject.

With the world opened up for more artists marketing their wares to a broader audience, of course there is going to be more bad art, along with more great art.
Same with music right now.
It’s just that bad art and music gets more press. It sells the news and moves that damned doom and gloom attitude that so many have grasped in a death grip.

For those that love Renaissance art, there's this local guy here who does these large paintings in that style. Gary Chapman. His very early works are sorta profane to say the least, but he has matured into a great artist IMO. These pictures don't do it justice. His layering of colors gives them that old, masters feel when you see them in person. Good stuff.
