Learning to breathsmoke is like learning to drive a stick shift. At first you have to keep everything in mind, focusing on clutch, shift, gas, release. But, then in no time, youre fiddling with the radio and talking on the phone while reading the newspaper and driving, without any notion of shifting gears. Smoking a pipe is the same. Every new pipe requires me to think about it, till I've got the method correct for the new pipe. But, other than that, smoking is just rote reflexes to me now.

I've found that if I can just sit and smoke (and maybe read a book), I don't have to think much about cadence anymore. On the other hand, if I'm lunting or doing yardwork (or if I'm smoking an aromatic that I haven't let dry properly), I'm back to constant relights after a few puffs. Evidently, I don't quite have it down at the unconscious level yet... :D

I puff at leisure until my head spins, set it down until it clears and repeat. LOL

Sounds like Sable and I are on the same page. I just don't get the full taste if I puff away like a chimney.

You made me think hard about this.
I think if you do it long enough, you develop and instinctual response to various cases: pause when running hot, puff short a few times about to go off, mid speed succession of puffs if you need more flavor after some slow down, long and slow to savor more, etc.
Honest, I just don't think about it. My mind is often elsewhere from the mechanism. Even when focusing on a new blend, mind is on the flavor, not he mechanics.
You'll develop your rhythm in a few months.
