I don't buy tobacco based on cut, however I found I was never disappointed and always pleased with plugs, flakes and ropes so I tend to stay with them. I think the blenders/producers put extra care on these cuts given the extra work involved in the production and likely use better tobacco quality which ends up in superior products. An additional advantage of these cuts is that they burn slower so they are great for small bowls, as well as they are better for outside smoking.

Said that there are also some very good ribbon cut/shag cuts and I enjoy them as well.

Flakes or plugs for me. I find ribbon/shag cut burns far too fast for my liking. I like a bowl to last me going on an hour which is what I get with flakes or plugs. More like twenty minutes with ribbon/shag cuts.
Thankfully most of my preferred blends come in the cuts I prefer.
Regards,
Jay.

I share Jay's opinion that ribbon and shag cuts burn too quickly. I prefer broken flakes.
I don't buy tobaccos just for their cut but I will avoid buying one if it's too fine (if that makes any sense).

I like cube cut (SWR regular). So easy to gravity fill with light tamp, and burns nicely with usually only one light.

I like the course cut of SToP War Horse Ready Rubbed. The pieces are larger than the codger blends (I like the cut of these, too). Course cut packs the best and smokes best for me.
I also like the cut of the Christmas blend, A Corn Cob Pipe and a Button Nose.
