I was full-on Lemmy/Frank Zappa for the better part of three years in my early-to-mid 20s, chops and all. Outgrew it, I guess. Went with a Don Draper/Morrissey hybrid about 15 years ago, and haven't looked back since.
When I was a kid in the 80’s, it was cool to have lightning bolts and other designs shaved in the side and back of your head. My older sister was going to beauty school, and I let her practice shaving designs every time she cut my hair. Looking back, they definitely looked like free haircuts. 
I had waist length hair the majority of my adult life but back in 2018 I let my son who was 4 at the time buzz cut my hair. I tend to keep it that way now.
I always had long hair until the Army. Then in 2022 I let it go again.
It got extremely long.
To the point my wife was jealous.
Once it got to the point I was sitting on it, I shaved it bald again.
It's currently shoulder length and growing.
I really just don't care....at all.
It grows until I get tired of it.
My 86 year old retired school teacher dad LOVES long hair on his 54 year old son!!
He will grab it when Im walking out of his house. To the point I almost fall down. And sometimes he calls me sweetheart.
But, he really doesn't care, hes known me my whole life.
It got extremely long.

You can do it yourself. I'd recommend Magic Clip - much better than cheap Chinese crap.
Told my grandkids I was going to let the sides grow long and pull it up into a man bun on top of my bald scalp, then my wife reminded me that God only made a few perfect scalps all the rest he covered with hair.
I haven't ever been to a professional hair cutter. My mom did it until 6th grade when I started growing it long. Then I trimmed it occasionally.
Before the Army, I used some dog clippers to shave my head to stubble. I wasn't going to give the Army the satisfaction of cutting my long hair!
Wish I had done that, my 1st day at Parris Island I wore a reverse Mohawk halfway through the 2nd the D.I. took me back to processing so they could finish the job, but they had a lot of fun beforehand.I haven't ever been to a professional hair cutter. Mohawk over the summer till my dad made me buzz it off for school. Never really did anything crazy since I was a kid. Oh yeah and the time I tried to bleach it blond so I could go as rocky from rocky horror picture show with my friends for Halloween but instead of blond it made my hair pumpkin orange.
