Most of us would not pay $20 for one bowl of any tobacco, no matter how good. Lets take it the the other way. Obviously someone could make pipe tobacco for 25 cents an oz, and sell it for a profit. But the quality would be questionable. Assuming this is a normal retail transaction, not show special, clearance, huge package, etc, what is the lowest quality by price that you purchase?
Or, if you were advising a new pipe smoker, "Don't spend less than $XXX, because then you have moved from fine tobacco into trash."

That's a difficult question to base the quality of a tobacco on cost. Take Captain Black and Prince Albert tobaccos for example. These are drugstore blends that have been around for ages and I can get them locally for less than $25 for almost a pound of tobacco. They are very inexpensive, yet the quality can be easily compared to some of the more luxury brands and some prefer these tobaccos to the more expensive blends.
Then there's the argument of tobacco constantly going on sale. Does this mean that the baccy is hard to get out of stock, or that the quality suffers more, or that it's just highly desirable that retailers reward their patrons? Many things need to be considered for the cost of a product, and I'd bet that a good deal is based on overhead, labor, etc.
Now, the consumer in me says that I'll try any pipe tobacco for as less $$ that I can get it for. Not because of quality, but because I'm always looking for a good deal.

I think the initial post's premise that price denotes quality is false. I have two gifted tins of Royal Yacht that have price stickers of $4.85. I'm sure they are as tasty as tins costing between $10.59 and $11.03. I smoke what I like because that's what I like, and not because of the price. I'm of the opinion that there are no truly bad blends, but rather that we all have individual likes and dislikes. Hype can make certain blends seem more appealing to some, but I don't pay attention to hype.

I am still getting to know tobaccos. 1Q is my price point, since I am stocking up on it monthly. I would pay less for a well recommended blend, or 10-15% more than 1Q for the same. Buying the higher end stuff is not for me, currently, as I am working to build up a stash (quantity).

Most of what I smoke is bulk that I order online.I buy it in five pound bags.I can still find decent tobacco for about $30 per pound.Though my favorite blend is pushing $40 per pound.Five or six years ago I bought it for half that.

being new to the game I have found that you state side people have got it so, so, so soooooooo good. I mean the selection the price , my god! the price! over hear I went into a tobacconist and he had 3 varieties erinmore borkam and amphora all $59 for 5o grm. I am looking into purchasing online and have tried a few that I liked. yet Because of the nanny state i live in and their like for tobacco tax, i have to play it cool and not put my head above the water too much in way of quantity as customs will jump on me and take it all, then bill me for their pleasure of doing it.

The least I'd pay.......... Well, I'd let them pay me to take it and I wouldn't even complain about the quality. :nana:

I'd love to find a B&M closing down and being able to buy out the entire inventory for 100.00 or so. I'm all for buying liquidations, close outs, etc. at rock bottom prices.

On that note, my local B&M Nat Sherman is discontinuing their blend #205, a VaPer flake that's actually quite good, and the quality is without question. I've spoken with a salesman who'll give me a very good deal on taking it off his hands, but have been hesitant of buying 6-8 lbs of one blend. If anyone's interested shoot me a PM, maybe a few people going in on it would make it more attractive.
