Very new guy here. Just learning about pipes. I just bought one that has a threaded joint with what I think is called a stinger in it. It is a vintage Kilimanjaro meer lined briar from Africa.

I may not not be correct about this being a stinger. Pipe has not arrived yet. But I have been reading about these stingers and am curious about them. They, and threaded pipes in general, seem to not be popular.

The theory was/is that it would condense the moisture in the smoke and thus prevent it from coming on up the stem. As to whether it really worked that well is the issue. I do know that from a collectors standpoint, removing the stinger from the original pipe is not good for the value. I will let others that are more knowledgeable about the process speak on the matter.

Horrible things but very useful for poking out a terrorists eye in a tight corner - especially if you are the pipe world's answer to Chuck Norris. Actually the concept has been around for a very long time since I have a few 'cutty' pipes with amber stems that have either a goose or some other birds quill that has been trimmed down and set in the bone tenon to form a stinger.

All of them dont screw in. Some just push in like a normal stem. You will see them discussed sometimes as metal filters.

I started out with vintage Kaywoodies. Generally you have to draw easier with stinger pipes because the draw is a bit more restrictive than a pipe without. But if you learn how to get a good smoke from a Kaywoodie or Dr. Grabow, you can pretty much smoke any pipe.

I don't care for them, as far as their performance goes, but have not made it a practice to pull them out due to ruining the original aesthetics of the pipe's design.

They are a bitch to clean around though.

Don't worry. No one uses stingers anymore. Unless it's for the sake of next generation's proper education in gentlemen's proper use of pipes and tobacco.

A Stinger is a delicious and dangerous after dinner drink that I had too many of — a few times. Brandy and Crème de Menthe. Or Cognac if you wish to call it.

Normally with clear Crème de Menthe, but using the green type made it look more lethal.

I don't think they enhance the aesthetics at all as they are largely unseen. If a collector's type of pipe, by all means leave it be, other wise, sayonara.

True dat!
