This forum has been such a great help in my pipe smoking journey so far. I have come to love this hobby and it has become a special part of my life. It has helped me to slow down, become more calm. Helped me think and helped me with preparing lectures for work and study for school.

I am still learning so much, but some of the things I have learned so far as a beginner.

Everyone has different tastes and that is ok.

Take it slower than you think.

Relighting is just fine, unless your in a slow smoking competition.

Don't throw out a type of tobacco on your first try, you may find that you actually end up loving it.

If your budget allows start building a cellar, even if it is only a few tins here and there it adds up.

You can find pipes that smoke well for a more affordable amount, but if you can afford it get a nice pipe.

Patience is key.

And another thing I have learned, listen to the good advice given on this forum, but don't take everything you read too seriously especially if you can't tell if someone is joking or not.
As a beginner I have found some tobacco I have really come to love.

peter stokkebye Luxury Bullseye Flake

Orlik Goldenslice

Lane's 1Q

Mac Baren Vanilla Cream Flake

Frog Morton On The Town

Dan's Bluenote

Samuel Gawith's Firedance Flake

GL Pease Haddos Delight

I am starting to become fond of Peterson's University Flake as well.
Again I just want to thank everyone who has been kind enough to point me in good directions. I really appreciate it.

Good stuff Bigboi.
These are the types of "lessons" I am in the process of learning. You can read them all day long, but in the end, it is through your own trial and error, that you "learn" what does and doesn't work for you.
Good post! :)

bigboi, glad to hear that you are really getting into this hobby. Listening to the advise of many people makes it easier to avoid the mistakes many of us have made over the years. The important thing is that everyone's tastes are so different and that there is no right or wrong when it comes to tobacco we enjoy. Experimenting with different smoking techniques is also huge in finding the right one that suits each individual. One thing I have learned over the years is that smoke the best pipes you can afford and don't let anyone tell you what tobacco you should like.
