Title edited for caps. Please read rule 9.

I started smoking pipes for two main reasons. One I wanted to give up cigarettes I'm sure I'm not the only one the other I don't really want to smoke weed anymore. That what I was thinking going in to this but I finding I injoy pipe smoking for so many reasons know. Learning about the culture the history trying different blends and looking at different pipes. I'm still learning how to do things lucky tongue bit is not scaring me off but Im getting the hangs of things but I think what like most is how relaxing it is. Even in the small town where I live in everyone is always on the go. No one ever stops and smells the smoke anymore.

There are many of us here for whom smoking a pipe is a link to another time and place, an experience that they can share with people they admire who have passed on. There can be a sort of nostalgic fantasy about floating a raft with Huck Finn and some corn cobs, or doing a little salmon fishing with Nessmuk and reducing some Navy plug under the stars, before tucking into a bedroll next to a well made campfire. Talking music with Bing, movies with Edward G Robinson, languages with Tolkien, theology with Lewis, history with Shelby Foote, you name it.
For others, it's an enjoyable hobby (or pathological collecting disorder), or simply just an enjoyable way to smoke.
Bottom line, I'm glad you are with us, and are making choices that you feel will better you. Cheers to you, and to many relaxing hours!

I also love how welcoming the pipe community is. Maybe because we're just a small group but I feel to be welcome in to other comments and groups they want me to slay a dragon for them. Her I feel that you all rather talk about a book on slaying dragons.

You have fallen into a great group of guys and gals. When I almost died this spring due to Long-Covid Auto-immune disease I could not have asked for a more supportive, caring family. We all enjoy pipe smoking for different reasons. I enjoy the whole process from selecting a pipe, deciding on a tobacco, packing it correctly and sitting back and letting the mind wander. I think back to when I was young and the old timers would gather around and smoke their pipes, cigars and cigs. I can still hear those zippos snapping shut. It brings me back to a simpler time.

Yeah I say the only thing I am sad about that the tobacco stores in my area don't really sell all that many pipe products. They're really more of a convenient place to pick up a carton of smokes and most of the pipes they have are weed pipes which I cannot imagine they'll make it an enjoyable smoke.

it is hard to articulate how deeply enjoyable and pleasant smoking a pipe can be. And in my opinion part of that is it's not a flat experience, it's very gestalt. It's not how it tastes it's not the nicotine it's not weirdly light but constant focus you need, it's all those things coming together along with the history and all that other stuff. I've heard it referred to as the mystic art of pipe smoking. Which makes sense.

And that's what makes it interesting. I just light a pipe and go while others focus their entire being around the pipe. One tool, a thousand uses.

some part of you is focused on the pipe. Even if it's automatic your brain is still running those functions. I know I am not explaining it so good and I am not sure what words best encapsulate the idea. That said even if it is all going on behind you consciousness the organ (brain) is still doing something really pleasant for it and healthy.

Cleaning it is another thing to appreciate this hobby. I love staring at pipe's grain while polishing & cleaning.
Looking at your piece of art after amount of elbow grease is one of the biggest satisfaction in this world.
Cheers!
I agree! I like giving it a good clean after a smoke... letting the pipe know that I am taking care of it and appreciate it. I put a fresh charcoal filter in after each smoke so it's ready to go the next time it's called upon. The cleaning is part of the overall ritual I enjoy so much. I'm just a 1 piper per week kind of guy, but it's definitely a part of me. cheers

Yeah I'm slowly enjoying the cleaning process myself actually. It's kind of the same feeling when you take the time to give your guns a good cleaning

Everyone has their own way of going at pipe smoking, but I am so devoted to the meditative side of it that I don't smoke a pipe when I drive or very much when I do other activities or chores. I use it as its own separate ritual and try to keep it separate from the whole concept of multi-tasking. Sometimes I even turn off the music or other electronics to focus on the blends. The only exception is chatting on Forums which often seems like the perfect complementary activity. Other members are a congregation. I will sometimes use it as a break between tasks.

I personally find that music helps the mood.

I feel the same way, I was picking up my phone for a while texting and surfing the net while I was smoking and then I realized I was missing the best part and I put the phone down.
