Well I guess my micro mesh pads and my block of carnauba wax better hurry up and arrive in the mail. I have nice little pipe that needs to be finished up before I can start smoking out of it.
Until then I think I might go buy some CB Gold to fill these large bowls. I probably also wont be buying anymore "VaPers". I didn't really know what Escudo was when I ordered it. I just saw it was popular and I was buying tinned tobacco for the first time.
I know its off topic, but I bought a tin of Dunhill flake with the Escudo. That should be a much mellower smoke because it lacks perique, right? I'm still learning about my blends.

Hmmm. No one has asked what's getting you down. Is it nicotine, an allergy or other reaction to tobacco, or

is the tobacco blend too strong? There's no harm in smoking partial bowls. It will wear the pipe in an unusual

way, but I don't think that's a concern. The pipe is for your pleasure, not resale. Smoking a bowl in increments

is also perfectly fine. Pack a full or 3/4 bowl, then smoke it on and off for a day, or two. You might want to

loosen and dust out the loose ash before relighting, but often just tamping down will be sufficient. I would

definitely get at least one or two smaller bowl pipes. Corn cobs would be an ideal, thrifty way to make the

transition. If you want a small bowl briar too, I recommend the Iwan Ries Exclusives compacts made by

Benton in the USA. But also, if possible, pin down what is causing your reaction to tobacco. It's anathema

to say on Forums, but maybe you shouldn't be smoking at all. If it isn't pleasant, don't do it.

I think it was a combination of a stronger blend than I'm used to and the fact that I don't smoke the bottom half of the bowl very often with any blend. Generally when I get down to that oily harder to light stuff in the bottom I dump it out and go inside. But since I was smoking my fancy pants Escudo I was determined to smoke it all the way to the bottom. I felt fine. Right up till I stood up. Then I didn't feel so good.

MSO489 is right, of course, but my opinion is that you're not at that stage. You just need to find the right tobacco, and smoke it properly (very slowly,) and before long, you'll be into the swing of things. There's much pleasure to be found in smoking a pipe, and it's waiting there for you. We've all been new smokers, and we've all had a bout or two with a tobacco we shouldn't have smoked.

Coty for what it's worth I had to endure quite a few nicotine storms while I learned which tobaccos suited me. Then I had to learn how to smoke like a gentleman rather than a man with minutes left to live. Finally, I had to learn that it's OK to fill a bowl, smoke what suits and park the rest until I could come back to it a while later. I come from an (English) farming background and I remembered that the farm hands I grew up with used to load a pipe at breakfast and smoke it in instalments when they had a chance through the day; they'd just tamp the bowl, stuff the pipe in a pocket and relight later. They said the rest actually gave them and the tobacco a break which suited both sides! I'd also buy smaller bowls. Good luck fella!

I'm gonna buck the trend and say don't bother with a smaller bowl if you like the pipe you're smoking. Often I don't smoke a whole bowl, and one of my newer briars has no cake at the bottom. In addition, I've a nasty habit of jamming the cleaner in too hard and the wire of the cleaner scratches the wood. Bit of pipe mud set in the bottom and left to dry and I think you'll be okay.

I will repeat my normal advice. There are no wrong ways to smoke a pipe, unless you set your beard on fire. But there are ways that will increase your enjoyment. Try some other methods and see if you enjoy them more.

If you don't smoke all of the bowl eventually, your nipples fall off
For cake I was told to put your thumb over the bowl and shake the ash around. When I have a plug I am dumping I take a little saved ash pour it in the bowl and shake that around. But then again I make a better cake in the kitchen then I do in my bowl, and I'm a framer amongst other things and we don't bake, so I will shut up now.

I don't like really large bowls for any kind of Va, as I find it gets too strong towards the end for my liking. I prefer large bowls for english mixtures as they're not so Va forward and are alot more mellow. Va's and Vaper's are pretty much the last type of tobacco's I've read most pipe smokers learn to appreciate, so if you're starting out you should go with blends, as from my experience also it took me about 2 years of pipe smoking before I started to try virginia's.

I have a few larger bowls,if I don't feel like smoking the whole thing I just let it go out and smoke the rest later.

Or, if you don't finish the bowl, you may come home and find your kittens finishing it off.

I've never known a cat of any age to empty an ashtray, by the way.

I don't like how the tobacco tastes after partially smoking a bowl... if I'm for a quick smoke because of time or if I don't feel like going for the whole bowl I just pack half and go for it!

IMO, only a Virginia or VaPer tastes good when you relight it after a while. Aros will continue to dry out in the bowl as the fire and heat dissipates, continuing to evaporate the casing and toppings, making the nasty burley taste step forward. Or, if it is a lat blend, it just leaves a sour taste as something weird happens to the latakia, sort of like a cigar. However, Va and VaPers tend to taste a tad better to me, as they dry out more releasing even more flavor when I relight it.
