Barling had their version of it before Dunhill entered the pipe business. A great many of the YOW graded pipes were finished in a deep red-purple stain. The later Garnet Grain range were a continuation of that. I suspect that just about everyone did this.

I remember my father saying that the 'Plum finish' was a must (way back in 1971). It was the biggest selling line for Charatan and remained so throughout the 1970s. I suppose it looked warm and 'broken in' when new. It also served well in hiding the small sand spots in this quality of pipe.

Even today, I notice the top Danish makers using this kind of finish. This one is a fresh Kurt B.
