Darkening on the outside could also come from some rough handling example: The Pipe being sat down in an Ashtray when there is maybe a still smoldering match in there. That would explain dark spots on the outside without visible damage on the inside of the bowl.

Also usualy you can taste a pipe that is getting to hot as in it will taste like a campfire smells and you migth even smell some wiffs of wood burning and on the inside you can usualy also see something like the walls crumbling instead of forming a solid cake and spiderwebbing forming, similiar to what you see on charcoal left from a wood fire.

Was the spot on there when you bought the pipe, or appeared after smoking it?
It could be a cigarette burn from being left in an ashtray. In that case it’s simply cosmetic.

Mike, I agree with John -- try reaming & give the inside a look. Or it could be worse.
It could be haunted.

Beginning to sound like it. Smoke it up gently & if it stays good on the inside & no worse on the outside it probably is just an exterior char.
