I have golf tees laying about everywhere. I hardly ever don't have something, but in a pinch, I'll use a finger. My pipe is never smoked to very high temps, and you just have to crush the ash a little. You really shouldn't be reaching the cherry with your finger. I've never been burned, and yes, ha ha Winton, I wipe them on my black socks as well.

I normally smoke in the garage so I have nails, spent casings and actual pipe tampers within easy reach.

If the need arises, I use my finger, or I grab a stick (as I always smoke outside).

But I always have a czech tool in my pocket, which I usually use.
