Dear Pipesmokers,
I am quite certain, the German carver Nils Thomsen is not very well established in the US and Canada, but to me, he´s the pipe maker in the neighbourhood, and I enjoy hanging around and talking about pipes, the world and everything else in his workshop a lot. Thomsen has been "pipe maker of the year" here in Germany in 2007.
I bought the following pipe last year. It´s 6,29" long, 1,77" high, Ø 0,82" and it weights 42 grams. The stem is ebonite, has an extremely wide-bore fisfhtail bit, that feels partuculary comfortable.
To cut a long story short - I´d be honestly interested to hear what you think about this pipe.

By the way, the zebu horn tamper shown in the first picture is made by Thomsen as well.
Kind regards

Sorry Schacht, I clicked when I didn't mean to.

What I was going to say is that I am not a big fan of contrast staining to the extint that Thomson uses, although a lot of people are. I think it looks like a well made pipe that I'm sure many would consider beautiful.

The shape is well done, and the long narrow shank is intersting. All in all, if it smokes well, he certainly deserves to be included among the many pipe artisans that are carving now.

I love the stain! I also love the pencil shank, the proportions; practically everything about it!
I'm not sure who carries Nils Thompson pipes here in the US, but he's obviously under-represented. But that could probably be said for German artisans in general.

I think the grain and overall craftsmanship are beautiful. I don't care much for the bowl shape, though. Based on this example I'd certainly like to see more of his work.

Something about the relation of the shank to the size of the bowl seems a little off to me, but that being said, the birdseye grain on the bottom is nothing short of gorgeous. I think a thicker, shorter shank would have made this pipe a home run, but even as it stands now, it is very beautiful.

I am not much of a little pipe guy, mostly because of my size. I wear a size 12/ shoe so you can imagine what the other proportions are, big feet, big hands. That said, I like the grain and the color and the offset of the pearl is a nice clash. I like looking at it. :)

I especially like his use of grain. The fact that it's essentially a classic shape, but with an interesting slant to the bowl, makes this piece especially beautiful. A great little pipe!
